Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey tells the story behind Highclere Castle, the real-life inspiration and setting for Julian Fellowes's Emmy Award-winning PBS show Downton Abbey, and the life of one of its most famous inhabitants, Lady Almina, the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. Drawing on a rich store of materials from the archives of Highclere Castle, including diaries, letters, and photographs, the current Lady Carnarvon has written a transporting story of this fabled home on the brink of war.
Much like her Masterpiece Classic counterpart, Lady Cora Crawley, Lady Almina was the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, Alfred de Rothschild, who married his daughter off at a young age, her dowry serving as the crucial link in the effort to preserve the Earl of Carnarvon's ancestral home. Throwing open the doors of Highclere Castle to tend to the wounded of World War I, Lady Almina distinguished herself as a brave and remarkable woman.
This rich tale contrasts the splendor of Edwardian life in a great house against the backdrop of the First World War and offers an inspiring and revealing picture of the woman at the center of the history of Highclere Castle.

I bought this book for a family member who loved the show. I' ve watched the first season of the show on the internet. When I heard that the show was based on actual events, I was interested in learning more. I wondered if there were books written about the characters of the show. I happened upon Lady Almina when I was in the UK. I haven't read the book yet, but my husband's mother is excited to read it.

The author and current Lady Carnarvon thoroughly researched this book. The 5 th Lady Carnarvon and the Highclere Castle of the 1800s are made to come to life by her writing style. The current chatlainee of Highclere Castle is an excellent and compelling writer.

THE END OF AN ERA...
Derived From Web , Jan 11, 2020
The wife of the 5 th Earl of Carnarvon, Almina, is the focus of the book. Almina was the illegitimate daughter of a very wealthy Industrialist. She married the 5 th Earl of Carnarvon at the age of nineteen, in order to secure the future of Highclere and her position in society. The book provides many details of her life, but it is hampered by the author's pedantic writing style. It looks like a term paper. There are a number of intriguing events in Almina's life. In the hands of a more skillful author, the book could have held the attention of the reader. It was a bit of a drag.

If you Love Downton Abbey
Derived From Web , Aug 12, 2019
The book was very well written and I found it to be interesting. I went looking for books to read about Highclare after visiting the Lightner Museum and seeing fashions from the show. This is one of the books written by the 8 th Countess. I was transported to a time of old when I read about it. Lady Almina's dedication to the wounded soldiers of WWI was remarkable, and she discovered how the portrait of King Charles the 1 st was made. It is beyond amazing that that hangs in the dining room. If you want to learn more about the rich, elegant, and royal history of Highclare Castle, you should read it and the next one, Lady Almina. You will have to read it to find the juicy tidbits.
