Book Overview

Whether you're new to the leadership ranks, a veteran, or recently promoted from one leadership role to another, Leading the Unleadable will guide you through the quagmire of difficult issues in turbulent times. Alan gives you the courage and skills to lead in tough situations, with tough people, in a tough environment.--Alan Weiss, PhD, author of Million Dollar Consulting

A great book. A great inspiration. And great leadership concepts for managing large organizations or even for leading teams of one: yourself!--James Over, technical director, software engineering practices, Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University

Your difficult people are often extremely valuable when turned in the right direction. Read this. Better yet, understand the concepts in this book and use them. This book teaches you the value of assuming good intent, and of focusing on the team rather than the individual.--Noopur Davis, senior vice president, Technology and Product at Comcast

   Fairly useless
It is mostly vague platitudes about trust, communication and teamwork. There is no actual step-by-step of how to deal with employees who are resistant to change, who gossip, who sabotage projects or anything like that. Well, YEAH. For the answer, buy another book.

Effective Leadership Strategies with a Healthy Dose of Sly Wit
I first became familiar with this book when I am working with one of my friends who leads a small team. She often gets frustrated with her staff and I bought Leading the Unleadable as a joke based on the title. The explanation is that I am more of an optimist and too often set myself for failure when working with others and their current competencies, and is a classic pessimist. I ended up buying a copy for myself and we read the book together. We both learned a lot, and while I can not say that we are still dealing with the same issues, I can say that our perspectives have continued to evolve and we have found new strategies around leadership and even self-management. The most interesting aspects of the book for me were the helpful anecdotes and tie-ins to project management. The title might indicate a harsh perspective, but Alan turns it around and reveals the importance of one's own perspective and effectiveness.

   Leading the Unleadable is Exceptional
Alan provides practical methodologies for dealing with trouble, setting expectations of excellence, hitting that sweet spot, prioritizing the work that matters and improving your ability to improve. I believe that every business should make this book a required reading.

Best thing I've read on maning knowledge workers since PEOPLEWARE and SWITCH
For 20 years, I worked in industry and academia. Before reading the UNLEADABLE books I found on Manaing Knowledge Workers were PEOPLEWARE by DeMarco and Lister and SWITCH by Heath and Heath. Amazed by the thought, the insight, the experience and the thoroughness of the book.

Only good for first time managers/leaders
For first time managers it might be a good read, but not for experienced folks who think there are some new tricks in this book.

   Strong foundation for management
This book provides a really good layout on how to approach management, especially for new managers. Willett does go on how to deal with difficult people, but does not spend as much time as the title suggests. Managing difficult people is only part of a manager's job. This book provides a broader view of management and leadership.

The title do no match the content
It provides general leadership advice and project management tips. But if you are looking for specials because you were attracted by the title, you will be disappointed.
