   Beautifully Written Classic
At the beginning of reading Les Mis, I was under the impression that I was in for a dull and boring experience. This story follows a man who has been on his luck since birth through a full life of atonement and adventure. At the end of the book, I found myself changed, asking what would happen to these surviving fictional characters? There was not a day that I did not want to read this book, and when I fulfilled my wish, I would worry about finishing this book and not being able to pick it again for the first time. I now want to watch the movie, read the play and watch it again.

   An amazing piece of literature
This is truly a classic piece of literature, an amazing one. Though the first fifty pages before each chapter contains a description that seems painfully long, and at the time seems irrelevant to the main plot, the suspense and pathos of the story is certain to draw the serious reader. Full of love, sacrifice, suffering, redemption and the suspense of several pursuits, narrow escapes and revolution in the streets of Paris, the book becomes hard to put at certain points. For the reader who is not satisfied with natural gratification and wants a rewarding piece of literature, Les Misérables is a satisfying choice.

   Long but loved it
You get the feeling that Hugo writes like many old novelists way too much background, but, believe me, he ties it all together. I have not seen the play or the movie so that they do not influence my opinion, I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. The title refers to the struggles that take you through the book easily and make it very difficult to lay. This is an excellent work, but it isn 't one that makes you feel good on the whole journey.

   Avid reader
I have read many classics, but this was breathtaking! I must admit to skipping pages and pages if historical facts found me more than I could bear. The expedition of Jean from Saint Joseph to Criminal was masterfully created. I couldn 't wait to skip the overloaded pages of information to get to the crux of the story. Transformation of life by a man. Add that... love! The love of a child! A child who gave him love so readily, though she had never experienced it herself. As a woman of faith, I believe that God blesses us even when we don 't believe that we deserve it. The movie comes out on Christmas Day. 122312 :

   Enjoyable Classic, but not worth re-reading
I actually finished reading this tome - yes, I called it a tome for how long it is before I watched the 2013 movie musical with Russell Crowe, etc. I was quite amused by it, but there were many parts that it felt like I was reading a textbook that dragged on and on. I did read many of the contextual things that Victor Hugo wrote at length, but there were also many times where I wanted to skip to the story instead of reading another 50 pages about the history of a particular order of nuns. I would recommend young adults to read it once, appreciate the good parts and then resolve to never put anyone else through this suffering again. There is a reason we don 't pay authors by the word.

   Introduction to France a Couple of Centuries Ago
I have not read the whole book, but only parts of it. Let me face it, I bet that every Frenchman knows this book. This book, set in turbulent France a few centuries ago, introduces us Americans to the French political and even religious atmosphere. It is not a good guy at the end of the book, but reflects American sophistication more than French simplicity and naivety. This is especially important if you want to see the real characters rather than the simplified ones in the Hugh Jackman movie or any earlier film based on the book.

   But the basic story was good and held your attention
I was very surprised at how many times the author went on a tangent and described things other than the plot. For example, when they tried to escape from the sewer system, he described sewer systems all the way back to 1200. It made the book very long, and you wanted to get back to the action. All these locations and names now mean nothing to us. But the bad story was basic and held your attention. I would recommend this book to someone who wanted a long read.

   An incredible story of one man's redemption.
I have seen the Broadway show and the movies. I am familiar with the beautiful, soul searching music, the passion of story and the relentless pursuit of blind justice. But I wanted to get the full story told by Victor Hugo and I am so glad that I did. I learned many things that I did not get from performances I had seen and I came to admire Jean Valjean's character at an even deeper level than I had.

   Almost unreadable
The digital version came through to my reader with blems that make it almost impossible to read. Almost every page is printed with multiple words together. It is so hard to read, that I have given up trying. I can not find anything on the Amazon - Digital - Order site to ask for a better copy or even a refund.

Although it is well known, it has very unnecessarily long descriptions of things that have no significance to the story. I ve to force myself to finish it.
