Book Overview
This Description may be from another edition of this product.
Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas.
They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more.
No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by Tolkien's inventiveness in this classic holiday treat.

It's a great book. There are pictures of the letters
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
The revised edition has a blue cover, so you can get the original with full- sized letters. You can use it, it's a large book. It is a great book. There are pictures of the letters. Where the letter wouldn't fit, they type it all out. I fixed the taping job that came with the cover because the tape was old.

In my must-keep Christmas book collection
Derived From Web , Feb 3, 2021
The book is beautiful! This Christmas, it was a pleasure to read a collection of letters written to his children by him. The letters are reproduced beautifully so we can see his writing and illustrations, and the text is typed so it is easier to read. It's a great gift for a fan of the author. My kids liked to compare the ideas in the letters with the ideas in his other works. The quality of the physical book is excellent, the content of the book is great, and the presentation is great. I am so happy.

Superb!
Derived From Web , Jan 6, 2021
Every Christmas, I would read the letters he wrote to his children and it was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I pictured this wonderful teacherFather sitting down and writing a letter to his family every year. Adding the names of the children as they were born and then more or less leaving them out as they aged out of the belief in Father Christmas made me smile the whole time I read it. The years went by. He lived through the Great Depression and WWII with his family. The letters written to Santa Claus by a superbly imaginative and talented author and a loving father are a must read for anyone who is a fan of The Lord of the Rings or who remembers writing to Santa as a child. It was wonderful. Thank you for your kind words. The author of The Lord of the Rings. It's a sad day.

Lovely and personal
Derived From Web , Jan 3, 2021
This little gem is a delight to find. Every year around Christmas, a collection of actual letters from Father Christmas to Tolkein's children are written and illustrated. The number of addressees becomes smaller as the family grows and the children grow up. The youngest daughter is the only one left. Father Christmas is known for his adventures with elves, and for his epic battles and new languages. He talks about how the war affects children and their gifts. Father Christmas goes away for a while, but comes back when the grown children have their own families. It is a testament to family love. The illustrations and letter copies are wonderful to see, so make sure to read in color.

“I loved it! It was really cool!†- my 7-year old
Derived From Web , Dec 30, 2020
My son, a true believer, loved reading this book for the first time. We read it before Christmas and finished before New Year's. The letters and pictures that were drawn for his children were recreated in the Kindle version. It made me feel guilty that I had not done the same thing. As an adult, I appreciated both the complexity of the stories and the way he builds a fully realized North Pole. It is interesting to see how he handles World War II and how it affected the lives of the children of the author. You will not regret it if you make this a part of your Christmas tradition.

Enchanting
Derived From Web , Nov 27, 2018
The audio enhanced the book to the delight of my granddaughters. There are pictures of the letters and his drawings that can be enhanced on this version. This book is very enjoyable to read. Each year at Christmas time, what was historically taking place was taken into account by the author. Families were having a hard time during war. The character of POLAR BEAR is wonderful.
