This Description may be from another edition of this product.

This wonderfully illustrated book introduces listeners of all ages to forty women who changed the world.Featuring forty trailblazing black women in American history, Little Leaders educates and inspires as it relates true stories of breaking boundaries and achieving beyond expectations. Illuminating text paired with irresistible illustrations bring to life both iconic and lesser-known female figures of Black history such as abolitionist Sojourner Truth, pilot Bessie Coleman, chemist Alice Ball, politician Shirley Chisholm, mathematician Katherine Johnson, poet Maya Angelou, and filmmaker Julie Dash. Among these biographies, readers will find heroes, role models, and everyday women who did extraordinary things-bold women whose actions and beliefs contributed to making the world better for generations of girls and women to come. Whether they were putting pen to paper, soaring through the air or speaking up for the rights of others, the women profiled in these pages were all taking a stand against a world that didn't always accept them. The leaders in this book may be little, but they all did something big and amazing, inspiring generations to come.

   Amazing African American Heritage Read
Brought this book for my daughter's class for the Black History Month. Decided in our household to make it a regular read.

   Love these books.
Had to have it for my girls, for my girls. We love these books. We are so proud of them. They are the perfect introduction for my youngest, with just enough meat to hook in my eldest. Historical figures for starting the conversation for each historical figure are great for starting the conversation for each historical figure.

Inappropriate for little kids read ahead
I really wanted to love this book, I really did. The animation was cute and I hoped it would be inspiring for my kids. But it is actually written as a short bio's that gloss over the accomplishments of these beautiful women of color, while putting more weight on the ongoing fight, although this is a reality in my honest opinion as a women of color, I would have really loved it if the focus was in spite of the difficulties ''. Also, what was quite disturbing was the reading about Alice walker being molested as a child. In a book geared towards young children, it is geared towards a book that is geared towards young children. I had read her bio as a young lady, but don 't see how this is appropriate for 4 and 7 year olds to hear about. Bottom line : the illustrations are great, but bio's where lacking. I keep the book because I believe in supporting black authors. However, I wouldn 't recommend it, and I wouldn 't recommend it.

Lots of info, very little of human stories
My seven-year-old daughter wanted to know more about African American history because she is in a very diverse school and has several close friends of color. I gave her this and a few other highly rated titles of the same ilk. While the bios are detailed on the facts, there is little to nothing about the stories of these notable women, which my children would be more interested in a list of honors and awards they won. Even a meaningful quotation or two from each, as in some other books of this type, would give a greater sense of their unique humanity.

   Awesome
Arrived a little late, but it was during a holiday season and I was informed that it would be a little late. It was only a few days late so that it was not a problem. It has one little page on each woman with a cute illustration... but that is still more than you get in the history books about these same women. At least, it is a good introduction for people to find out about them so that they can further research.

   Essential for your children’s library
This book exceeded my expectations for my expectations. I bought it as a gift for a kindergartener and I'm thinking about purchasing another copy for my children. Representation matters and this beautifully written and illustrated book hilights many heroes we know and those we should have heard in the history class. Love it!

   Great for Older Kids
Let me start by saying that this is a very nice book. The illustrations are quite cute and have an endearing quality about them. This includes a very nice selection of black women. This goes far beyond Harriet Tubman and Maya Angelou and introduces many women about whom you will never learn in K-12 education. I would not recommend this to younger children, however, because it is not written in a way that engages them. As much as my five-year-old loves these illustrations, the writing just doesn 't excite her or keep her attention.

   Amazing book
Wonderful book that includes many folks I have never heard and glad that I have now. I read it for my granddaughter, but I received it myself when I visit her for my own education. It is full of good information and history, and is very, very good. Nothing like this existed when I grew up and so I am glad for my granddaughter that she will know much more about her history and thus be empowered.

Adorable illustrations, even better mini bios
I bought this book for my daughter not realizing that the Bios were as in-depth as they are. I say the illustrations and sort of assumed that it was a book geared towards a younger audience. I am so glad that I was wrong. The bios included in the book range from women I’d heard and studied to women I was glad to learn about. While the bios are in-depth and contain complex words, my toddler will sit at two to three bios at a time. And I know that as she gets older, she’ll sit more and we can discus both history. I love it ''. I hope soon more from Vashti Harrison '', I hope to see more from Vashti Harrison.

   Amazing.
Amazing. Adorable. Perfect for children and adults alike ''. Bought it for my book shelf because I HAD to have it. I bring it with me every time I visit my Neices and read them a few of the stories in HerStory before the bed. They love this time we spend together, and it has been better than if I would have given them their own copy.
