Book Overview

My little dark baby, / My little earth-thing, / My little love-one, / What shall I sing / For your lullaby? With a few simple words as smooth as a song, the poet Langston Hughes celebrates the love between an African American mother and her baby. The award-winning illustrator Sean Qualls's painted and collaged artwork captures universally powerful maternal moments with tenderness and whimsy. In the end, readers will find a rare photo of baby Hughes and his mother, a biographical note, further reading, and the complete lullaby. Like little love-ones, this beautiful book is a treasure.

This is for a dark skinned child
I love '' Langston Hughes. Book would be great for a dark skin child, but not for a lighter skinned African American child. I have purchased this book as a baby shower gift. I do not know what the baby will be skin tone, so I was surprised when I read it, but I love Langston Hughes, but this is definitely for a darker, skinned child.

   Lullaby Book (African American Moms)
I'm still on the fence with this one... I'm still on the fence ''. The thoughtfulness and illustrations are great, but the direction of the story is lost or buried in constant descriptions and adjectives of the baby. Wasn 't sure if it was a rhyme or a song.

   Don’t waste your money
It's horrible! Ritter is lazy and has no imagination.

   Not what I expected
I thought this was a book of AA nursery rhymes, but it is a book of Langston Hughes poetry. It is a great book, just not what I expected.

   I wanted to love this
The illustrations are beautiful, but the Lullaby are just sad. To me, it just makes sense. It seems to me like words thrown together. I wanted to love this, but its not exactly what I expected.
