Book Overview

Explore the Grand Canyon with John Wesley Powell in the New York Times bestselling graphic novel series

John Wesley Powell always had the spirit of adventure in him. As a young man, he traveled all over the United States exploring. When the Civil War began, Powell went to fight for the Union, and even after he lost most of his right arm, he continued to fight until the war was over. In 1869, he embarked with the Colorado River Exploring Expedition--ten men in four boats--to float through the Grand Canyon. Over the course of three months, the explorers lost their boats and supplies, nearly drowned, and were in peril on multiple occasions. Ten explorers went in, but only six came out. Powell would come to be known as one of the most epic explorers in history

Great history lessons in a graphic novel format!
My kid has fallen in love with the Nathan Hale series of graphic novels. It's such an easy read, based on historical fact. He would never read a single text book on history. But in graphic novel form, he says, "it's more entertaining and quicker to read." I would definitely recommend any of his books to other kids to learn about history.

   Beloved series
It was one of my daughter's more beloved series. This as it was new thinking she might enjoy it, and she was surprisingly please to get it and read it right away. Still enjoying the writing style and content even though she is an older teen now.

Great books. Author needs to do more research on religions
I did not like how his faith was inaccurately portrayed in his book. Nathan Hale should do more research about religions before he stereotypes them in a negative light to all his readers. I had a great discussion with my son because of the author's prejudices, his mom said. Next time, I would hope the author would do more homework on a faith that I cherish and love. Other than that disappointment, these books are amazing and help my kids fall in love with history.

Great Way to Interest Kids in History!
We have the entire collection of Nathan Hale's novels. My son is excited to see new releases, his mom said. He loves pouring through the action packed books complete with maps. It's a great way to get kids interested in history while being kid-friendly in comic strip format.

   More Informative Than Fun
It's great to see another Nathan Hale adventure. I admit that I wasn't really excited about the Grand Canyon Civil War setting filled with men, but I did learn about a historical figure I wasn't previously aware of. And I appreciate the acknowledgment that these explorers were exploring land already discovered and occupied by Native Americans. The writer also felt short and rushed, the story said. I would also encourage more NHHT adventures featuring more women and people of color as the heroes. It's when people who were enslaved are referred to as slaves, as if slavery defined and made them who they were. There is a line in the book where some slaves were referred to as former slaves. Rewording to men who were formerly enslaved makes a difference.

10 year old boy loves these.
My son is a strong, but reluctant reader. He has devoured every book by Nathan Hales in the series. It's raw, but history is packed.
