Book Overview

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELER

For the first time, trusted and beloved cookbook author Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, answers the number one question she receives from cooks: Can I make it ahead?

If you've ever found yourself stuck in front of the stove at your own party, scrambling to get everything to the table at just the right moment, Ina is here to let you in on her secrets Thanks to twenty years of running a specialty food store and fifteen years writing cookbooks, she has learned exactly which dishes you can prep, assemble, or cook ahead of time. Whether you're hosting a party or simply making dinner on a hectic weeknight, Ina gives you lots of amazing recipes that taste just as good--or even better --when they're made in advance.

In Make It Ahead, each recipe includes clear instructions for what you can do ahead of time, and how far in advance, so you can cook with confidence and eliminate last-minute surprises. Make a pitcher of Summer Ros Sangria filled with red berries, let it chill overnight for the flavors to develop, and you have a delicious drink to offer your friends the minute they arrive. Simmer a pot of Wild Mushroom & Farro Soup, enjoy a bowl for lunch, and freeze the rest for a chilly evening. You can prep the kale, Brussels sprouts, and lemon vinaigrette for Winter Slaw ahead of time Read More chevron_right

   Not Impressed
Not a lot of recipes I would make, Mr. Dhaliwal said. I was interested because she mentioned her make-ahead Thanksgiving turkey. I thought how helpful that would be to make it today and serve it tomorrow! Realizing this, she changed her mind and made it in the morning and reheated it before dinner. Yes, I already do that.

I was hoping for better menu ideas
What do you think of the new menus? The majority of the recipes are not that appealing to my family. Even if you do recognize the ingredients, it can be hard to put it all together. Most of the recipes cannot be made that far ahead and they still require some work in the kitchen, making spending time with your guests limited. It's great to have it at the library, said Gillian Berryhill, a reference librarian. Go ahead and buy, live and learn, Tunick said.

   I love this book
I've read all the books, and I love this one. I immediately opened the book and found the cover to be completely different from the rest of the book. I love all her little personal anecdotes throughout the book, and the recipes all sound wonderful. I immediately had many items flagged for different reasons. I'm so thrilled to have a great cookbook with good strategies for creating great meals, Melissa Jarman, executive vice president of food for AOL, said. Thanks for the donation, Ina.

   Would not recommend.
A lot of people were a bit disapointed. I expected more comfort foods, Mr. Caramore said. The recipes that were in there are probably never going to be used again. It merely tells you how to chop ahead, make sauces and other things. Now I have to go back and do that again." I wanted dishes that could be made ahead and stored, saving money at the grocery store. Brand new, would not recommend.

   Very Disapointed
I love Ina Garten, but this book is just too good to be true. It was very plain and bland, even for a Broadway revival. I thought she could have done a lot better. It wasn't worth all my anticipation.

   Excellent cookbook!
It was a present from a friend for Christmas. She has attended French cooking school and worked as a professional chef. She was thrilled to be writing a book, Mr. Rule told us. She also told the inquiry that she has a soft spot for cookbooks. She also said Blair never reads them like novels. So glad I got this for her!

   Chef Shall Smile
Trying new recipes. These are easy to make and are great for entertaining. No last-minute panic, Mr. Dhaliwal said. Everything is under control in the kitchen.

Surprisingly thorough for those new to healthy food and entertaining
It's great book for those new to healthy eating and having friends over for food. Party planners. I would work to do food prep together.. if that was part of your fun. Or have friends make different parts of the meal and bring over as planned.

   Love the book...
Before you can get to the book, you must have a library card. Great recipes, said Dr. Dan Guarino, Food Network's executive vice president. She told her husband to buy a present for her husband on Valentines Day. It's the best present ever. Will continue to use this book over others I have purchased.

I'm sure the recipes are good, based on my experience with all of Ina's ...
I'm disappointed because I was quite excited to have some of her great recipes that a busy working gal can make ahead of time, Mrs. Booher said. It should have been cheaper to buy it in a store.
