Felt like unedited notes from class; Not easy to follow
Derived From Web , Feb 14, 2020
The artwork was charming and the copy was energetic, but this did not feel like a welcoming way into writing comics. My children were not drawn in because it did not feel like there was a plan, a roadmap that they could see how they were going from here to there or where there was. If you know that you want to learn or improve your comic skills, this will be full of ideas for you and you'll get lots of suggestions. For us, not so committed before we started, the lecture note style didn't have enough pull. It felt like it needed the author to stand there to tell us the other 80% of the message, while the book served as a reminder.

This! Book! Rocks!
Derived From Web , Jan 2, 2020
If you enjoy laughing, having fun with your friends and family and doing cool things, you will love Lynda Barry's Making Comics. This is a thoughtful and complete recap of her previous live class at the University of Wisconsin, including much of her wonderful thought and philosophy on the role of the image in human evolution and is full of her substantial artwork. But it is also full of excessively fun drawing exercises that are wonderful for sucky drawers as well as professional artists. We adore this book so bad! The best gift I have given myself in a million years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had probably forgotten a little bit how much I!! Barry!!!!! i am so happy! If you wish you could go to Wisconsin and take her class like I do, you could save the planet instead by getting this book on your kitchen table with your friends! You can also order it from your local groovy independent bookstore, so that you can stick it to the man!

A wonderful, enriching book on the creative process of comix (and more)
Derived From Web , Dec 22, 2019
Lynda Barry is a treasure who freely offers her gifts, and I am so glad that she does so. This is a version of her class that she teaches at the college level, and you can go through the process yourself if you like. You can also read about the process and learn about creativity and reflect... It is just a wonderful book.

This Book Will Make You Happy
Derived From Web , Nov 29, 2019
This book is uplifting, inspiring and beautiful. I happen to be someone who has never drawn very well, but wants to draw again. It is perfect for me. However, even if I don 't have an interest in drawing, art, stories and information are compelling and warm. I truly believe that anyone will enjoy this book. I first learned about the amazing Lynda Barry when I was a kid reading Ernie Pook's Comeek. Since then, I have read everything Lynda Barry ever published - and every bit is a treasure. In everything she does, there is kindness, wisdom, openness, and compassion. Her work is for me like a tonic and a salve. This book comes to me at the most painful and difficult time of my life. This is a work that you will love and go back to again and again.

Excellent Resource
Derived From Web , Nov 21, 2019
I have used Barry's SYLLABUS in my graphic novel workshop, but will move to MAKING COMICS next semester. MAKING COMICS has much of what I loved about SYLLABUS-great assignments and lots of inspiration, but I like MAKING COMICS a little better for the classroom because its organization is more like a textbook. Barry has a full mind, a generous heart and an unshakable belief in the importance of drawing. She will awaken the desire and confidence in the reader to create worlds on paper.

Inspiring and freeing
Derived From Web , Nov 20, 2019
If you were inspired by Syllabus but found it frustrating to follow, this book is for you. Instead of trying to recreate a class while missing all the information provided during the class, Lynda has given us a set of exercises to use on our own. There is no sense of missing anything because everything you need to make comics is here. She's here to free your imagination and give you the confidence and direction you need to tell the story you want to string together.

Fantastic Guide on Creative Image Making
Derived From Web , Nov 7, 2019
I was expecting to read about creating comics, but this book is actually a comprehensive primer on creative image making. If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a student in Lynda Barry's class, this book is for you. She gives such detailed instructions on so many projects that it will take me a very long time to work through them all. Another home run by the accidental professor is another great teacher!
