Book Overview

Bilingual English/Spanish. Mismatched and fabulous Marisol McDonald celebrates her Peruvian and Scottish heritage.

Marisol McDonald has flaming red hair and nut-brown skin. Polka dots and stripes are her favorite combination. She prefers peanut butter and jelly burritos in her lunch box. To Marisol, these seemingly mismatched things make perfect sense together.

Other people wrinkle their nose in confusion at Marisol-can't she just choose one or the other? Try as she might, in a world where everyone tries to put this biracial, Peruvian-Scottish-American girl into a box, Marisol McDonald doesn't match. And that's just fine with her.

A mestiza Peruvian American of European, Jewish, and Amerindian heritage, renowned author Monica Brown wrote this lively story to bring her own experience of being mismatched to life. Her buoyant prose is perfectly matched by Sara Palacios' mixed media illustrations.

A wonderful book on numerous levels
Her dilemma, being teased and corrected for her unique style, is pertinent for preschool and early elementary children. The book is not preachy, nor does it take criticism from others so far that it would make sensitive souls or super young children uncomfortable. It is very well written and the prose has a great child-like voice. And the story is written in both English and Spanish, on top of all this. She now loves to read it in both languages for me. Marisol! Go out and play!

   I absolutely loved the message
Got this book for a friend who has a multi-racial baby. I loved the message, the fact that it is bilingual, and the editor's note about how the title was difficult to translate into Spanish because people can not match. What is also true for English. When Marisol finally embraces the fact that she likes to combine things that aren't typically combined, the reader sees how silly it is to define what can be and can not go together in the first place.

   highly recommend!
I received this book for my children, as they are Spanish and English and we like tonread Boles in biracial language. Marisol Mcdonald was a character that I felt could show them what it meant to be from 2 different cultures. Not only was this book fun to read, but also gave a great message of empowerment that it was ok to be who you are, even if that meant combining cultures. This is certainly one of our favorites!

   Good Concise Fun For All
We got it for my children, who are mixed - race. I'm happy with a book that can playfully address this, but what I like most is that it validates being unique beyond the race. The narrative of liking different food combinations, creative dress, imaginative play, etc. are all particularly great and something I think is very important.

   Great multicultural children's book
This is such a cute story with creative illustrations that really amplify its message. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, but especially those who want their children to know that it is okay to be from more than one background culture - language.

   Great find.
This is a gift for my great grandson. So apropriate, because her parents'native languages are different and she looks like her father, but her brother looks like her mother.

A great book showing it's ok to be a bit different
Marisol is a Scottish-Peruvian girl who is a little different from all the children in her school. This is why she feels like she doesn 't match. Along this story, she learns to appreciate those cultural differences that make her so special. This book will be a great addition to bilingual families and/or families from different cultures. The first time I read this to my child, I almost cried.

   Not matching is great!
As a real family ourselves, that laughs at the things we come up with that doesn 't match this book, it was a hyphenated hit! Our British-American family may not speak Italian like Marisol, but we do not match and we love it! It is a helpful book about being yourself and being true to yourself, which is delightful for everyone. I think this book will take on more meaning as our three years old grows up, but we all love reading it for now.

   Buy for Your Classroom!
I bought this book to read to my first grade student because the class is a rainbow of beautiful faces from all over the world. Ecuador, Togo, Hawaii, the Philippines, Samoa, Vietnam, and even Chicago! Several students are multiethnic and/or multiracial. I think that this will be the perfect song to add to our kindness conversation, because it teaches people not only to behave kind to themselves, but also to others.
