   Oldie but Goodie
You have to be familiar with this book to know how fascinating it is for older children. It is an oldie but goodie, full of drawings and maps to accompany the story of the turtle. Every child, even if only vaguely interested in nature, should have this book for their own.

   Wonderful with a geography/nature program
My kids are now working through Holling's books as part of a geography program. Loads of factual information about historical times, geography details and nature facts, yet still keeps the kids asking for more. I like that each page has a full color, a full page illustration and each chapter is a page long. It makes it easy to break into pieces.

Every child deserves a chance to read this book.
At the age of 52, I vividly remember discovering this book in my 4th grade as a boy, especially the luminous color illustrations and drawings of Hollings, used to tell the story of a snapping turtle from the Mississippi's trickling source in Minnesota, to its fullness in the Gulf of Mexico. In following the life of Minn, from a veteran survivor of many predators and adventures, I learned about the history and lore of the river and the animals and people who live in it and along its banks. This is a book that does not speak to its young readers. I am now buying one to read again and share with any grandchildren who may come in our family.

   Get the hard cover version.
I agree with everything else 5 star reviews have said. We had this book when our children were little and I think I learned a lot more from it than they did. We ordered it just for our grandchildren, who are now at that age. My only regret is ordering the paperback edition. The hardcover, which we had before, is much easier because you will spend a long time on each page... Just checked the prices and you have to add if you can afford it. If not, you will love the paperback.

   Meh. It was okay.
Meh's wife is also in the picture. This is after reading Pagoo, which is such a cute book. This was not as good. It seemed like the story was forgotten sometimes Minn was there.

Great descriptive reading of the 1800’s along the Mississippi River
We use the book to supplement our study of the 1800s America. Sweet story of a turtle's adventures on the Mississippi River.

   Great book, no twaddle
I found this a rewarding read, but difficult. I guess I'm used to reading lower books, but this is rich in vocabulary and language. I thought it would be too hard, as I read it to my daughter, but she was able to tell me often what I had just read to her. ) Happy Mom, Happy Mom!

   Turtle Tales
My boys loved Minn, and I, to be honest, also did. It is like a science lesson and a geography lesson and a little history lesson all in one book. This isn 't a sit and read all the way through in a sitting kind of book. I love the delicate artwork and the sketches. On the way, I added activities and turned it into an event. We learned a lot that we did not know from Minn.

Engaging story studded with scientific details
My seven-year old daughter was also interested in the sight of Minn and the scientific diagrams on the margins. I will recommend it highly for both boys and girls. This is one of the best science books meets storytelling books that you will find.
