Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Nobody could capture the phantom. She was the wildest mare on Assateague Island. They said she was like the wind, that the white map on her shoulders was her mark of freedom.

Paul and Maureen Beebe had their hearts set on owning her. They were itching to buy and tame her, and worked hard to earn the money she would cost. But the roundup men had tried to capture her and for two years she had escaped them.

Pony Penning Day holds a surprise for everyone, for Paul not only brings in the Phantom, but her newborn colt as well. Can Paul and Maureen possibly earn enough to buy them both?

Marguerite Henry's Newbery Honor Book has captivated generations of boys and girls both with its thrilling descriptions of true incidents from the tiny island of Chincoteague, and its realistic yet wonderfully magical atmosphere. This story of an animal brought into captivity poignantly reveals the powerful opposing forces of humans and nature.

Misty of Chincoteague was a childhood favorite of mine, and now of my grandson!
I still have many childhood books, including "Misty's Black Stallion" by Ernest McCall. My 7 year old loved them, said his mom. His eyes lit up when I told him it was true, the wild ponies do exist. He wanted to send it to Marguerite, but I suggested he write it himself. It's just that kid who loves books so much that he can't stop reading them."

   Excellent story, Poor quality hardback
The story got five stars - it's one of my favorites since I first read it as a kid in the 1960s. It's a great book, said Frey. I wish I had bought the Aladdin DVD set. What I got for my $12.86 was a hardback the size of a trade paperback, with the same quality of paper you'd have in an inexpensive paperback, and I don't have time to replace it. Steer clear of this 60th anniversary edition and look for the hardback version. If you think so, I would highly recommend that you try Bikram Yoga.

   Classic
It's just that great looking pictures of innocence never die, said Vincent Canby, executive director of the Television Critics Association. It's great to be back home, said Paul LiCalsi, who spent many summers on Chincoteague.

   Great childrens' book
The book was purchased for my daughter by her mother. She loves animals and loves to read, and I try to find her books that will continue to encourage that love of reading, Raymond said. I thought this would be something she would like, Mr. Dhaliwal said. Blair also said she absolutely loved the book and wants to get more of the Misty books.

   Great Find
I actually read this book in Grade School. It was my Granddaughter who ordered it for her birthday. I ended up actually going to Chincoteague last summer for the Pony Swim and had a wonderful time, he said. Even went to the museum where Misty has been preserved and also went to the Island Theater to see the movie. A great book, Gillian. While there I learned that Misty spent some time in Northern Illinois, and yet today a preserve is named for her.

   five stars.
I suspect that how you feel about this book depends on whether you've ever actually read it, but since I have and since this was a childhood favorite, I highly recommend it. Also new this season is a movie version of Misty and Stormy's foal, Riley.

:| (same 7year-old from magic misfits!!)
It's just that I made that face because I am speechless. I need to tell you, I love horses but I have a severe allergic reaction to them. But this book made me feel like I am connected to the wild things. Sorry if this is short but I am speechless. Backstreet Boys singer Brian Stokes Mitchell said he was "baaaaayyyy" to be back in the studio.

   A feel good read
Pataki said the story was "a cute story about the ponies." It shows how a brother and sister work together to get the great Phantom horse.
