Spanning seven decades and three continents, Modoc is one of the most amazing true animal stories ever told. Raised together in a small German circus town, a boy and an elephant formed a bond that would last their entire lives, and would be tested time and again; through a near-fatal shipwreck in the Indian Ocean, an apprenticeship with the legendary Mahout elephant trainers in the Indian teak forests, and their eventual rise to circus stardom in 1940s New York City. Modoc is a captivating true story of loyalty, friendship, and high adventure, to be treasured by animal lovers everywhere.

The most enchanting, endearing and informative book about elephants that I have had the good fortune to discover! The adventures and mishaps-the courage and fortitude-the cruelty and also the tenderness-its difficult to believe its a true story. This book should be available in all libraries, zoos and every animal rescue mission.

Children's version of the novel, MODOC by Ralph Helfer
Derived From Web , Jun 2, 2022
This is a children's book for ages 2-10, filled with illustrations, telling the truely incredible story of MODOC, the greatest elephant in the world. Much of the story is lost to the reader by being shortened, but the illustrations are engaging. It may attract an interest in ordering MODOC, the great story of the greatest elephant ever lived, for the adult reader.

Modoc was Great!
Derived From Web , Jun 2, 2022
I was referred to Modoc by my sister who said it was worth reading ; she was much too mild in her assessment. It was one of the best books I have ever read from the heart, animal books I have seen in years. I learned so much about elephants, how to take care of them and how close a human can really be to an animal, something I always believed in my heart. I would recommend this book to any animal lover... it made me cry several times... but it was worth it.

Indie- style and classic
Derived From Web , Aug 6, 2021
One of the best books I have ever read in a very long time. It raised the bar of excellence on memoirs, storytelling, prose and style. I never thought that a story about a boy and his animal could bring me to tears. It is even equal parts classic and indie - quite a hidden gem. Modoc and Bram's journey is an unbelievable story and the way it is told is perfect.

You would just have to decide for yourself
Derived From Web , Jun 5, 2020
We were both disgusted with the sexual innuendos with reference to a 13-year-old boy. It was completely out of place, did not contribute in any way to the story and was just something to sell the book, being a steamy couple of moments. The story of the elephant was interesting, otherwise.

Disappointed
Derived From Web , Feb 24, 2019
I read other stories by Ralph Helfer and was hoping that this would be as heart warming, but it is honestly more cringey than anything else. It is a fun story at times and can make for an enjoyable read. BUT, there is absolutely no way that this is a true story. I think that Helfer took some aspects of the story on creative events, but based a lot of true liberty with 70% of the book. It is written like a screenplay and I suspect that Helfer was hoping that it would become a movie someday and maybe it could work as a film, but that does not make for great reading. As a zoologist who actually works with large, exotic and wild animals for a living, I can not take seriously any of this story.

If you love animals, especially elephants, you must read this book. Not always kind and real, but honest and happy. Amazing story of love and a magical bond between a boy and his elephant. Modoc was special, a very unique elephant and you, the reader, will not want to put the book down.
