A Mighty Girl Book of the Year

With magical animals, science, mystery, and adventure -- the brand new series Zoey and Sassafras has something for everyone Easy-to-read language and illustrations on nearly every page make this series perfect for a wide range of ages.

In the second book of this series, a forest monster shows up looking for help with an embarrassing problem and Zoey is sure it will be a simple fix. But her first two tries at helping him fail and she has a sobbing monster on her hands Will Zoey and Sassafras solve the problem in time for Gorp to go to the annual Monster Ball?

Each story in the Zoey and Sassafras series features a new magical animal with a problem that must be solved using science. There isn't a set formula for each book; Zoey sometimes needs to run experiments, while other times she needs to investigate a mystery, and yet other times she needs to do research. Zoey models how to keep a science journal through her handwritten entries in each story. Each story is complete with a glossary of the kid-friendly definitions for scientific terms used. The series highlights child-led inquiry science and the topics covered align with both Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards.

   Great series
We're huge fans of the book, and we love the Coens. Great characters, great science integrated throughout the story that my child wants to hear again and again. My only critique of this book and the second in the series is that Zoey is trying not to cry, or to stop someone else from crying, or to hide her tears from a parent. It's nasty, I don't like that message. Only a few people have really criticized him, I can say.

   2nd grade read aloud
I haven't finished it, but my students are enjoying it, he said. I've had my usual go-to's all feature white characters so I needed to switch it up, Hollingworth said.

   Buy Now- great books!
I'm a huge fan of all the books. These nooks have turned my daughter into a reader and into a budding science teacher. The books exploded her imagination into every possible dimension of the world. These are the only two seats available on the plane. New York: HarperCollins, the world's No. 2 book publisher, said Thursday it had received orders for 2.5 million copies of "Fifty Shades of Black." Now play the video game.

   Excellent Vocabulary
I got this to help students prepare for the spelling bee -- the vocabulary is great for kids and the story kept their attention, Mrs. O'Neill said.

Digital copy wont open on kindle anymore
A great story, told by a wonderful arthur. But I can't get it to open on my kindle, and we are only halfway through the book. I purchased a digital copy and now I wish I had gone with the paper back.

   Great for Many Ages
My 7 year old son and 3 year old daughter both loved them. Great stories and enough pictures to keep the younger one engaged, Morgenthau said. The product is highly recommended.

   Fun & exciting
My 5 year old absolutely loves the series. Vocabulary is expanding by the day. The stories are super cute and exciting for her, Weinshall said. We read two chapters a night, about a week. My daughter is always excited about the next book.

Zoey is a strong role model and has good positive self talk
My daughter absolutely adores the books. The boys make her laugh loud, they say. The author makes the scientific method and exercise of mind-control accessible to a child of any age. She is a strong role model and has good self-esteem, Raymond said. Her mom encourages her to figure things out on her own but gives her support when she's stumped. The beast isn't scary, and is scared of Sassafras. She has a very good sense of humor, Bruno said.

We're not huge fans of Dr. Goin's work, but we loved this and even felt the need to do an experiment of our own after reading. We had bags of moldy bread taped to a window for a week and my child instigated the whole thing, Mrs. Cowger said. These are the only two books I've read that were so good.

   Fall in love with Gorp
My son is a huge fan of the "Zoey and the Sassafras" series. As with the other two books, Zoey leads kids on an exciting adventure of science. We paired this book with a chapter from Asia's book The Curious Kid's Science Book, which my son is loving. We are homeschoolers and this is a great way to learn about science.
