Teddy and the Badlands

I like his writing style. This book has been in print for quite some time, as this was one of his first books written. This biography is 95% about his early life and leads up to the time he is in office as president. The same guy, but different focus of the author. If you like Teddy, this book will be a great addition for you. I hope that helps.

Great Story of a Great Family

This book is on par with the other books by David McCullough that I have read. His in-depth descriptions of the many people who fill Roosevelt's world is so vivid that you feel like you are watching them in the scene. Having watched the PBS series on the Roosevelts twice, I was not sure that I could learn a lot more, but I was wrong. McCullough shows how wealthy people were in the 19th century, and how prim and proper. They rarely showed their true feelings, but instead acted as one of the upper class was expected to behave. The book begins with the story of Teddy's grandfather and ends with Theodore's death. The family was very wealthy, but felt a duty at the same time to help others who were less fortunate. I could hardly put the book down and loved every minute of reading it.

While most of the story is about Teddy, his life is seen as one that takes place in his family. Some of the book is very interesting. It is long reading, but easy. The idea that asthma is caused by a desire to gain parental attention on the part of a child that is presented in this book as a fact iin far outside the general attitudes about asthma today. The fact that Teddy did not have asthma in Europe and had it in the forested parts of Egypt should give some evidence that asthma may have been caused by allergies. This is not mentioned in the book, however. It was also a life that was hardened by tragedy.

This is a biography that is very personal and engaging. I knew almost nothing about TR before picking it up, but finished the book feeling that I had reached the goal intended by the author to know what went into the making of the man who became president. I also learned a lot about American history that I might not have been that interested if it was not presented in the context of TR's life.

Very Interesting Read on the Life of this President

This book was a great read about the life and presidency of Teddy Roosevelt. The book begins at the beginning of Teddy's life and his great sadness when his first wife dies in childbirth. He eventually remarry and goes on to become president. It is interesting to read about his science '' trips, as he wanted to be a scientist in life. But he was very involved and became very opinionated about politics. The book is well-written, and I learned a lot about this president that I did not know.

McCullough is an excellent historian of social science. One of TR's grandsons mentioned that other biographers had not captured how much TR was part of a clan and McCullough fills that void. And, of course, the main subject is handled with skill and accuracy. My only wish is that McCullough would have written a good biography, but there are other good options for this, I think. In any case, the goal of the present book is to conclude when TR is fully formed as a man. It is a story of becoming, full of excellent life lessons that can be observed on the way. In this way, the book fulfills its purpose magnificently.

Another great novel by one of my favorite writers, David McCullough

I just completed this book on Teddy Roosevelt, written by one of the greatest biography writers ever. I have read all of McCullough's books and not one disappointed. My favorite authors are Doris Kearns Goodwin and Doris Kearns. Great storytelling of lives, personality, family moments, friends writings on Teddy, all his adventures, etc. Most people think boredom - biographies are surely non-fiction. This one will have you laughing, amazed by the amazing adventures of Teddy all over the world, his love and appreciation of other peoples and cultures and his forward-thought legislative action he brought with great passion for passage in Congress.
