Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Making and maintaining lasting changes in nutrition and fitness is not easy for anyone. Yet the communication style of a health professional can make a huge difference. This book presents the proven counseling approach known as motivational interviewing (MI) and shows exactly how to use it in day-to-day interactions with clients. MI offers simple yet powerful tools for helping clients work through ambivalence, break free of diets and quick-fix solutions, and overcome barriers to change. Extensive sample dialogues illustrate specific ways to enhance conversations about meal planning and preparation, exercise, body image, disordered eating, and more. Reproducible forms and handouts can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2 x 11 size. Instructors requesting a desk copy from Guilford will be emailed a link to supplemental PowerPoint slides and exam questions.

This book is in the Applications of Motivational Interviewing series, edited by Stephen Rollnick, William R. Miller, and Theresa B. Moyers.

Motivational Interviewing for dietitians & beyond!
As a registered dietitian, I am always on the lookout for ways to better understand my job. By that I mean ways to help my clients more effectively. I was turned on motivational interviewing a number of years ago and have read a few books on the subject. The other books were helpful, but I would get a little frustrated with the examples provided, as they were often related to issues other than food and healthy lifestyle choices. On the other hand, this book is all about helping clients to make healthy lifestyle changes and helping them to eat healthy eating habits. It is the best book I have read on this subject and I would say it is a must read for anyone who works with people to help them make healthy eating and lifestyle choices.

Learn to guide rather than tell
I am a personal weight loss coach and the information here is gold. Disregard the negative reviews, because my book was well printed and by using this information, I have helped so many others. I am now an ally to my clients, rather than another person pointing out their bad habits and what they should do to change them.

Print quality is bad - see through pages and a chapter inside is printed upside down
Pretty disappointing that this book is of such bad quality. I bought this book as part of my studies in the lead up to the course and did not see problems until my return window was closed. You can see the printing on the opposite side coming through pages, which is distracting and an entire chapter is printed upside-down. boo is a good friend of mine.

You need Motivational Interviewing in your clinical toolkit, even if you don't use it all the time
For sure, more applicable to the outpatient population, but it does cover more fast-paced inpatient examples of motivational interviewing. I recommend this book to all food and nutrition professionals, interns, experienced RDs or the most new RDs with a million more letters after their names. Numerous examples of concrete assistance are helpful and concrete.

   Highly recommend
This is a personal book that I find very helpful as a great coach and nutrition coach. I wish I could take all the info in this book and get it just in my head and practice, but that will take time. -) In just the first few chapters, I learned a lot that I have been able to apply, so that I can be more effective in communicating with clients.
