Book Overview

If you're an application developer, or you're training to be one, this 2016 edition of Murach's classic SQL Server book is made for you. To start, it presents the SQL statements that you need to retrieve and update the data in a database. These are the SQL statements that you'll use every day. Then, it shows you how to design a database, how to implement that design, and how to work with database features like views, scripts, stored procedures, functions, triggers, transactions, security, XML data, BLOB data with FILESTREAM storage, and the CLR integration feature. The result? You'll be able to create database applications that are thoroughly professional. You'll be familiar with the DBA-related issues that let you work far more effectively than most of your colleagues. And you'll have a handy reference at your side to answer questions and handle new challenges as they come up.

This book was adequate for the purpose
Had to get a book for school. It was written well. There could have been more examples in certain areas of the book. It seems like it's helpful.

   Marginally okay not great
The book was disorganized, it was hard to find the correct subject, and there was no information about why, how and when to do specific tasks.

This is my go-to book for teaching SQL Server to programmers
I' ve bought sets of these books multiple times to teach our developers how to do in- house training without using the database. When they need to learn something on their own, I want to give them the basics. Things are stated clearly in this book and it is one of the best. In my 35 years of doing SQL, I have never used those features I present from the chapters a different order, but the book allows you to do that easily. Murach is a company with nice people. They have been very responsive and helpful when I have contacted them with questions or asked for some powerpoint slides to go along with the books. I'm always happy to work with companies like that.

   Really confusing book.
This book is hard to understand. It's made for both beginners and advanced users. The information is mixed together. I almost failed my class due to how confusing this book was.

   Awesome book for learning SQL
The presentation the author uses is very helpful. It's always good to have a teacher available to help you learn, but this book is a good resource and you can learn a lot from just using it. Just reading won't suffice on its own. If you have access to a computer with the software this book talks about, you can follow along with the examples the book goes through.

The book was very good. Everything you need to learn how to use a database is contained in this. A good reference for experienced programmers.

   Superb Informational Referencing
This book is a great go- to- guide for any problems I run in to, as I am about to start my career as an SQL back end Programmer. It was originally bought for my online database programming class.

   GREAT reference book <3
This book is very good. It explains things well and has many examples. I use this in class with my textbook. This is more about learning how to code. It's not very detailed for the database side, but that's not what this book is about. The book is a great reference book. It has everything that I need. It is easy to find things. That part is a win. I didn't find that a problem because it doesn't use the database. I'm not taking off any stars because they use their own, but I would have preferred adventureworks.

   Terrific book. Great format
This book is the best I have ever read. I am an experienced programming person. Maybe not. There is a book that covers all aspects of Database programming. I would recommend Dejan's text for a thorough treatment of CLR functions. There is everything else here. A word about the format. There are even numbered pages with expositions. There are well designed examples on the odd- number pages in the book.
