Book Overview

Scholastic's award-winning reading program is now available to pre-readers with the creation of two pre-Set 1 boxes

Expanding upon the BOB Books step-by-step philosophy, these sets offer children and their parents a simple and satisfying structure for getting ready to read. The Alphabet set introduces uppercase and lowercase letters and initial letter sounds, helping children match sounds to letters, letters to words, and words to a story. The Pre-Reading Skills set uses humorous read-aloud stories to introduce spatial, relational, and sequencing concepts that kids need to start reading on their own.

Includes:

1. Circle and Square

2. Circle and Triangle

3. The Opposites Game

4. Up, Down, and All Around

5. Make a Match

6. What's Different?

7. Big and Tall

8. Short and Small

These are great for 4-5 year olds to start word recognition
These are great for ages 4-5, they help kids learn the ABCs of word recognition. We read them every night before bed. They love them, Tunick said.

   Not what I expected
The first two books were not quite what I expected. It's just that I still like the Dick, Jane and Spot books. Dick's had it all - acting, singing and dancing - until the police showed up. I am sure that I will get used to them, Mr. Dhaliwal said.

   Great set!
Great set of books to help kids learn different skills such as shapes and tracking words with your fingers, Ms. Rule told us. Not really meant for children, because the sentences are difficult for them to read. Great practice showing them how to read a book, too.

   Good small and simple stories
They were so thin and not much color, so I didn't know they were there. My daughter liked them both.

Very useful, a lot of additional information for parents
Very useful, lots of additional information for parents. As a Master's Level Teacher for children with learning disabilities, I will recommend this series to parents looking for learning tools to use at home.

   Good
These books are smaller and have many more words that are also harder to read than the regular Bob's books. But these are designed to be read to the child, so that is mostly fine. I took off one star, because one of the characters, Seth, looks virtually identical to the character Mac in the regular Bob's books. It's in the series that Mac and Seth are brothers, but my son still points to Seth and calls him Mac. I wish they did something to make the two brothers look a little different, Tunick said.

For older child not a 5 yr old that doesn't no how to read
The groups that they are on the back of the box don't seem to fit in the green box, the pre-reading skills look like something a six or seven year old would read. My son is 5 just starting kindergarten he does not know how to read at all the blue book set 1 beginning readers seems like it would be a lot easier for him.

   Disappointing!!! Missing books
In a generous gesture of uncharacteristic compassion, Rowling offered 12 copies of her book in a box. There are just 11 left. This is supposed to be a pre-K reading skills box, and there are only five actual books that belong in this box. The other six sets of books had the blue dot that belonged to Steacy 1 Starting to Read 1 Beginning Readers.

   He
My 3.5 year old son absolutely LOVES the books. The Hewitts inspire questions and conversations that are completely age appropriate. Or, it could be predicting the next step, or even changing a pattern. Good stuff, Mr. Rule told us.

These are for very pre-reading skills, wasn't quite what ...
These are for very pre-reading skills, not quite what I needed with my child that already reads letters, Mrs. Pearson said. Our books also came with flaws, a couple of them had missing pages or pages that weren't inserted correctly, so we returned them.
