In her quickly gentrifying rural lake town Jade sees recent events only her encyclopedic knowledge of horror films could have prepared her for in this latest novel from the Jordan Peele of horror literature, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones.

Some girls just don't know how to die.

Shirley Jackson meets Friday the 13th in My Heart Is a Chainsaw, written by the author of The Only Good Indians Stephen Graham Jones, called a literary master by National Book Award winner Tananarive Due and one of our most talented living writers by Tommy Orange.

Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre. On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Jade Daniels is an angry, half-Indian outcast with an abusive father, an absent mother, and an entire town that wants nothing to do with her. She lives in her own world, a world in which protection comes from an unusual source: horror Read More chevron_right

   Too novel for my tastes
Disclaimer : I was 10% when I gave up on this author's style. When it took several pages of florid teen angst head chatter between what is your name? I realized that this book isn 't for me, and the character's answer, I realized that this book isn 't. His idea of an interesting protagonist, one who'd warrant endless introspection a la the above example, just didn't pass my smell test. If you're into horror movies, word puzzles, teens who speak like philosophy profs and screenwriters and like your plot development served cold, as in spaghetti intestines smashed from a mountain lake cold, give it a shot. I like my plot intestines hot and fresh and ready when I am.

   nope
Our author has written a middle aged protagonist for us with the personality of a teenage male single man who lives in his mother's basement and watches horror films. i couldn t make it through 50 pages of this pretentious sad little book. However, I love the title!

   Painful Reading
Literally, I had to stop reading it halfway through the story. The heroine, Jade, is tiresome and it is hard to develop empathy for her.

   A Slasher Book!
Had I read that one word just now, I probably wouldn t have this! Because I was the one who was too scared to watch horror films. Least if it was all a slasher. But I had read The Only Good Indian and liked it so well that I was willing to give it a chance. I am glad that I did. It seems that I can read a slasher and not get quite so scared. And I would also put this as a who has done it. But from reading this, I learned that a slasher is exactly. Like Jade, I kept thinking that I knew who was behind it all. And like Jade, I was wrong. So, for anyone who is not sure of horror or slasher stories, they are not firing. I say give this a try.

An Ode to the Slasher Genre, with a twist
Basically, I have read everything I have from SGJ and this was no exception. It was a love letter to the slasher genre with typical American culture woven into the native American tropes in a fresh way I have never seen before. And as a huge slasher fan myself, I loved all references to different killers and final girls throughout. However, I warn you that if you still have a lot of slasher films to see, you may find yourself spoiled for some! SGJ has a very different writing style, sort of like a stream of consciousness style that takes some time to read, but if you haven 't tried his work, I think this would be a great one to try. When the pieces fell into place and the things were revealed, my heart actually broke a little bit. SGJ has cemented himself as one of my favorite authors and I can 't wait for people to get their hands on this book.

   Book of the year, 2021
I have read very much all SGJ's novels that I enjoyed, but this... This is itself something else. I could not put it down ''. I could read only 3 hours at a time during the three days it took for me to sleep in the still moments of hectic daily life. I would read it and sleep for a few hours before moving back to the couch and reading. And now that I'm completed, I am both sad and elated. I am sad that I came to the end of my time with Jade, amazed at the thrill of reading such an amazing novel.
