Has helped us identify new & rare animals
Before we moved from Texas to North Carolina, my husband bought a book to help us identify some of the wildlife we saw. My 4 year old was fascinated by the book and asked a lot of questions while looking through it. It has helped us identify some of the newer animals we have here in North Carolina. This book can only cover so much, so we had to buy a more specific book to identify the trees in our yard. It has been a great addition to our library and something we use almost daily. The presentation was well presented and organized. Highly recommended!
This is a good book, but it needs better organization. Tabs on the pages would have been useful. It is a good idea to put a small post. The pictures cover a lot of ground for its short length. Each species description is less than 100 words, and the sections are short. This makes it readable but also creates gaps. The book skips some species that are common to this area and there are sections on species we will never see in Arkansas. It's small and portable, and I can read it to my kids at preschool age. The book needs better organization but lacks depth if you are a serious naturalist.
Good, but Not Great - More of an Overview than a Complete "Go-to" Guide
I thought I would get more info from this being a beginner even though I had read the other reviews. The other reviewers didn't seem to be satisfied because they had so much knowledge. Not really. One reviewer said the book was broad and not deep, even at my beginner level. The coverage of spiders in our warm environment was lacking, only five of them were listed, and the listings covered multiple pages - I just received the book, and this is what I have noticed so far. I like the book, it's good for quick reference, and I have learned a lot from it. It was not what I hoped for in covering our wildlife. The glossy pictures help me and my children.
Interested in what's crawling on your screen outside? Buy this.
I' ve purchased one of these guides before. Since moving to a new region, I have used it dozens of times and knew I would need it. I think it's a must have for anyone who doesn't have a lot of interest in biology. The book covers too large and biodiverse a region so the guide is seemingly incomplete. Several insects that were not included in the guide were found by me.
Great guide to carry along on outings
Plants and animals that do not occur in the southeast are not included in the book, which is a great guide to carry along on outings. When I am in a tree stand, I like a book like this because I can identify all the trees within a reasonable distance, and I can use my binoculars when the morning is slow. The organization is well thought out, the photos are great, and the descriptions are good. The book is worth a lot more than the price on Amazon suggests and the knowledge one can gain from it is priceless.
   Don't Leave Home Without It
The book has been helpful for Mississippi Wildernesses. It seems to last a while. Over the years, this book has held up well in my back pack and I work in land preservation. The pictures have helped me identify plants and animals in the field and at the desk.
   missing subtropics?
It's missing a lot of my plants. We are sub- tropical and they may be Central American migrants.
   Missing So Many Basic Things
I moved to this region some time ago and felt bad that I didn't know more about the flora and fauna that I see on a regular basis. I decided to start with this book. When I got it, I looked up some of the things I hadn't seen before, but they weren't in the book. Some of the trees that people tell me define the local area don't show up here at all. The book is too small to cover such a large region, and therefore doesn't do its job well. I don't recommend looking for a guide there.
   Great book and seller
I was curious to know what kind of animals are in this area since we just moved from California to Georgia and are starting all over again inside and out. The book is full of wonderful information. We are building bird houses and bat houses. The bats should be able to eat all of the Mosquitos. We just moved from California to Georgia and are starting all over again inside and out, so I need to know what will grow in this area. The book is full of great information. The package was wonderfully packaged and arrived sooner than expected. Highly recommended product and seller! It was packaged wonderfully and arrived sooner than expected.
