This fun, affordable, beautifully illustrated introduction to birding is like taking a walk with National Geographic's birding experts. Of this book's 192 pages, 160 are devoted to North America's top species, one per page, from the lowly House Wren to the majestic Bald Eagle. Carefully chosen illustrations and photographs capture the key details and typical behavior of each bird, paired with a short list of essential facts and a fun, fascinating, colloquially written bird-ography of each bird. (The latter feature is unique to this beginning field guide). Pictures plus facts plus story: a winning combination. With a small trim size and colorful illustrations, this pocket guide is easy on the eyes and easy to stash. Great portable book for a new bird watcher

I bought this for my 5 yr old daughter and she loves it. It is small enough to fit in a briefcase or a small briefcase. The photos are visual and make it easy to find birds by vivid description.

Good guide to selected birds, but omits some great birds
Derived From Web , Nov 21, 2018
I found this pocket guide to be a great source of information about the selected birds, but I am baffled how they decided which birds to include. For example, it omits my favorite bird, the gathered woodpecker. For those who are not familiar, the piled woodpecker is a large, fairly common woodpecker that is found over large parts of the US and Canada. The Woody Woodpecker character was a stuffed character. Why they decided to leave an iconic bird like the baffling Woodpecker, makes me wonder what other significant birds have been left. I think they should have expanded the number of birds included, rather than leaving an iconic bird, such as the gathered. I see that some other reviewers have the same issue with this guide. Nice guide for selected birds, but omits common and iconic species.
