Book Overview

The star of The Incredible Dr. Pol shares his amusing, and often poignant, tales from his four decades as a vet in rural Michigan.

Dr. Jan Pol is not your typical veterinarian. Born and raised the Netherlands on a dairy farm, he is the star of Nat Geo Wild's hit show The Incredible Dr. Pol and has been treating animals in rural Michigan since the 1970s. Dr. Pol's more than 20,000 patients have ranged from white mice to 2600-pound horses and everything in between.

From the time he was twelve years old and helped deliver a litter of piglets on his family's farm to the incredible moments captured on his hit TV show, Dr. Pol has amassed a wealth of stories of what it's like caring for this menagerie of animals. He shares his own story of growing up surrounded by animals, training to be a vet in the Netherlands, and moving to Michigan to open his first practice in a pre fab house. He has established himself as an empathetic yet no-nonsense vet who isn't afraid to make the difficult decisions in order to do what's best for his patients--and their hard-working owners. A sick pet can bring heartache, but a sick cow or horse could threaten the very livelihood of a farmer whose modest profits are dependent on healthy livestock.

Reminiscent of the classic books of James Herriot, Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow is a charming, fascinating, and funny memoir that will delight animal lovers everywhere.

   Drl Pol At His Best
At first, I was leary about getting this book. I love the show The Incredible Dr. Pol so much that I was concerned that the book might be done by some ghost writer and I wouldn 't like it. I just couldn 't figure out how Dr. Pol would have time to write a book. I was greatly surprised ''. Read this book is like what I would imagine an evening with Dr Pol like. Even though I don 't know the Pol's, it was like sitting with an old friend down. My only complaint is that the book is too short. If you watch the show, you won 't be disappointed, if you don 't watch the show, you won 't be disappointed.

If you know Dr Pol you'll read this book like you're listening to him speak!
I followed Dr Pol's TV show and have a deep admiration for his old school logic and great respect and love for animals of all sizes, shapes and species. He embodies everything good about people of character and strong work ethic, and is the kind of family man that our current society needs. I listened so often to him on his show that I seemed to listen to his book. The same words, same style, same humor. It is a great read and reveals some of the things that are not shown nor brought on TV, especially more insight into his family and their values. We can 't choose our family, but if we could..., my family would include the incredi-POL - doctor and his. Laughed so many times, I keep this book close for the down days when I need a smile. However, warning... you may just end up considering an Emu or two as your next family addition.

Fun Read But Book Suffers from Poor Editing
I enjoyed reading the background stories of Dr. Pol and enjoyed his show. For the poor editing I gave it 3 stars. This book must have been done quickly and from what I can tell, so from verbal interviews. As an editor who has written several books, this one certainly did not get the structure and editing it needed. A lot of diving around, stream of thought, and repeated content. Dr. Pol deserves a better editor, but then Dr. Pol is a vet first and I doubt that book writing, however accomplished, is a top priority for him. If you're a fan, it is worth reading, just try to find it used and save your cash for other books.

I’m afraid we are losing dedicated people like Dr. Pol.
Easy to read and you can tell it is Dr Pol writing. His TV show is also great. A modern day Dr. Harriet.

Doc Pol is as honest as the day is long!
Dr Pol is as long as the day is honest! He loves doing what he loves and shows up in his television series and in his book. Being on television has not changed who is Dr. Pol. He remained grounded. It is great to know that there are still some honest and caring vetoes out there. Way to go Pol! Doc Pol!

   Entertaining and Great Read
I stumbled upon this book due to my previous book interests and it wasn t until I started reading that I realized he was on a TV show. After reading the book, I would love to see the show, since I enjoyed the book quite a lot. It was interesting, informative and entertaining. It was a great veterinary documentary, although my favorite is still James Herriot. I really enjoyed this book, though I was disappointed when I read so quickly through it, because the stories were all so interesting! Recommend for Ages 7+ Animal lovers Veterinary field interests Farming interests.
