Book Overview

When Grace Snyder, the matriarch of a pioneer Nebraska family, wrote these reminiscences in her eightieth year, she felt she had been blessed by having no time on my hands. The story of her busy life begins on the high plains of Nebraska, where her parents homesteaded in 1885. She recalls her childhood in a sod house on a frontier that required everyone to pull together in the face of hostile weather, serious illness, and economic depression but that also held its full share of good times.

As a child of seven and up, writes Grace Snyder, . . . I wished that I might grow up to make the most beautiful quilts in the world, to marry a cowboy, and to look down on the top of a cloud. At the time I dreamed those dreams and wished those wishes, it seemed impossible that any of them could every come true. But she saw all of them realized.

No Time on My Hands is a remarkable chronicle of the sod house era and of Grace Snyder's married life on a ranch in Nebraska's sandhills. From there she finally flies above the clouds to exhibits where her quilts contribute to a worldwide revival of quiltmaking. Mrs. Snyder lived twenty years after the publication of these memoirs in 1963, to the age of one hundred. Her daughter, Nellie Snyder Yost, who helped to write No Time on My Hands, has added an epilogue to this Bison edition.

   Didn't want it to end!
It's well over 500 pages, but it was so good, I almost fell over. In turn, I gave it to two of my BFFs for Christmas, and they feel the same way. It pulls you into the family dynamics in a time we never knew, through our grandparents or great grandparents. I could never be a survivor, he said. Buy it, you will love it too.

A Life Well Lived on the Prairie By One of the Most Famous Quilters of All
Like many Ingalls fans, I was disappointed the book was not published. He left his wife at age 23 to start a new life in Nebraska. She is known for her quilting and made one of the most well-known quilts of all time. I've read other books by Frey, but this one stands in a class by itself. Good storyteller: Clare Hinds is a good storyteller, as she relates tales of prairie life. There is much to learn about life, philosophy and the universe.

   Fascinating story of Grace Snyder
Very well written and describes the life of Grace Snyder. Even as a small girl she was confident of her abilities and could do things I would not have imagined. Grace overcame unimaginable hardships and became well known in her field. The detailed descriptions of daily life on the prairie in early days and how people survived the deprivation and loneliness with determined courage will stick with me all my life. I think this is a very upbeat book, said Dr. Joseph. Simon, director of the university's English department.

   Great history of Western Nebraska
I've read many of the books, but the anecdotes about quilting meshed with a history of the Sandhills. I would recommend it to anyone.

   Excellent read!
I've read all the books, but this was by far the best. If you ever wanted to know how a town got settled this was for you. I've read all the books, and I always recommend them to friends and family.

Pictures in listing are not of the book received!
The book is listed with an accompanying photo of a first edition signed by WH Auden. Both are true, I received them both. The outer cover was also not included with the book. The book is also illustrated with images from the college library, which has no affiliation with the university. If I was just looking for a Fifth Edition book from a library, this would have worked. What a waste of time, energy and money!

This book is so good, I recommend it to anyone. Badlands is a real hidden gem about all kinds of first hand history in and around the Badlands area.

This is not a book just for quilters!
Loved the book, Simon. It's the life story of a woman who grew up in Nebraska and the ups and downs of her life, told through the prism of a newspaper reporter. I've had a hard time putting this book down to get other things done, so I'm not thrilled with the outcome. Thanks to a good friend, I bought the book and my husband wants to read it again. This review is highly recommend.

Great book on Homesteading Life in Nebraska
This has to be one of my favorite books I have read on living in Nebraska in the late 1800s. The author's detail was such that I could imagine myself there. I was interested in this book because my great-grandparents moved to Nebraska during the Depression.
