A year later, they're both studying at Trinity College in Dublin. Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain. Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together. And as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other. Normal People is the story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find that they can't.
Praise for Normal People A] novel that demands to be read compulsively, in one sitting.--The Washington Post
Arguably the buzziest novel of the season, Sally Rooney's elegant sophomore effort . . . is a worthy successor to Conversations with Friends. Here, again, she unflinchingly explores class dynamics and young love with wit and nuance.--The Wall Street Journal Rooney] has been hailed as the first great millennial novelist for her stories of love and late capitalism. . . . A well written story
Cody Mowers , Jun 9, 2023
The book was very well written and the story was highly compelling, I just didn’t like the actual story of the book. Sally Rooney was trying too hard to make me depressed.

solid literary fiction pick
Vani M , Mar 14, 2022
very unique writing style from one of the most promising current authors. better than conversations with friends, and ties in Rooney’s anti-capitalist views more seamlessly. would recommend for those who are looking for literary fiction recs

Normal People Review
Olivia , Jul 9, 2021
This book is great, but not for everyone. I loved it! It’s good if you’re the type of person that can appreciate and find the beauty in what could appear to be mundane to some. If you were to ask me what this book is about I would first respond with: “nothing” because it is truly just following the lives of the two main characters who aren’t living under any extreme circumstances. But I would also tell you about the beauty in Marianne and Connell’s intimate connection and how it makes for an amazingly raw story. If you’re an untraditional romantic, this book is for you :)

Normal People
Derived From Web , Sep 23, 2020
I love this book. I have seen the mini series many times. I decided to read it. I read the first three chapters while cooking dinner. It's not a hard read, it's enjoyable. If you like the mini series, you will like the book. As the reader, you have more insight into the aspects of Connell and Marianne that have more depth. Books are usually better than movies. I think they are both equal. I have more to digest. I haven't arrived in Sweden yet. The plan is to not watch the show until I have read all the books and then watch again. I would like to see more of Connell and Marianne. Sally Rooney will give me more.

Punctuation Needed
Derived From Web , Aug 1, 2020
I wanted to read a lot, but the lack of punctuation makes it hard to read. It's hard to follow someone who is saying what without quotes. I know it is the writer's perogative to take "poetic license" but for me it has gone too far. I prefer Page numbers over location numbers when reading on a device. When I read it on my iPad, the page numbers are there but not on the device. It was very strange.
