Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was an English social reformer, statistician, and pioneer of modern nursing. She became famous during the time she served as manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, giving nursing a positive reputation and becoming a Victorian culture icon. Also known as The Lady with the Lamp, she was an accomplished writer who produced work related to medical knowledge. Nightingale's 1859 work Notes on Nursing - What It Is, and What It Is Not represented the fundaments of the curriculum at the Nightingale School and other nursing schools, despite originally devised as a guide for home nursing. It includes every day sanitary knowledge, covering such topics as taking food and what kinds of food, bed and bedding, light, cleanliness of rooms, personal cleanliness, etc. Contents include: Ventilation And Warming, Health Of Houses, Petty Management, Noise, Variety, etc. Other notable works by this author include: Florence Nightingale to Her Nurses (1914), Suggestions for Thought (1860), and Una and the Lion (1871). Somewhat dated, but some truths never change
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
Valid advice and seemingly common sense are for the most part. Now that medications are the basis of healthcare, basic tenets seem to have been abandoned. There are some old fashioned attitudes about women and some references to social classes in Britain that seem quaint rather than annoying.

Still relevant today
Derived From Web , Feb 8, 2022
I used this book to write a Meta paradigm paper for a Bachelor's of nursing class. Ms. Nightingale's ideas are about caring for the sick and elderly. Her points are relevant. There are still problems with noise control, sanitation, antibiotic resistantbacteria, environment control and ambient control relevant to patient well being as a use of healing.

Important and interesting history of nursing
Derived From Web , Mar 31, 2020
I read this book as part of my nursing education in the 1960's. It was good to read it again. A modern reader might think that her recommendations are obvious in light of today's scientific knowledge, but many of her insights were new for her time. I appreciate her stress on the importance of the nurse's observation. Careful observation and interpretation of what she sees is what a nurse will attribute to intuition. Miss Nightingale believed that the nurse's management of the patient's care was important, so that everyone involved in the care knew the plan of care when the nurse wasn't there. It was very forward thinking. She was the first to establish nursing as a profession separate from medicine.

Basic text for health care
Derived From Web , Jul 2, 2017
This is a classic and should be read by all nurses. Nightingale was one of the pioneers. The dignity and importance of educated nursing care for the care of the sick was established by her. The importance of her basic insistence on sanitation cannot be over emphasized. In Victorian England, it was a new idea. It is very important in modern health care because of the rise of super infections. penicillin was the first antibiotic to be used for health care in that era, but it wasn't available to the public.
