Remarkable Effort to Raise Social Justice Issues
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
Remarkable effort to translate many different social justice activists'ideas and experiences into social science fiction. Most contributors are not interested writers, but they have come up with professional stories that have been carefully edited. I know of no comparable published collection, and I urge readers and readers of Sci Fi to sample the stories of the best-known contemporary sci - fiction authors to shame when it comes to raising social issues.

I was not comfortable with the sudden stops
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
Some are more interesting than others, which is expected in such a book. My only real objection to stories is that sometimes they end up very abruptly. Problems are often left unresolved. This technique can be effective in some stories. In others, though, I sometimes felt like I was reading a teaser for a longer story -- probably a full book. The book was otherwise light science fiction entertaining.

Disappointing.
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
I wanted to love this book so much because I really love what it set out to do. I was looking forward to an anthology of fiction that did not follow the usual science - fiction - patterns and presented compelling viewpoints from characters, unlike those we usually encounter in fiction. Unfortunately, after making it halfway through, I just couldn t continue because the stories are by and large, not very good. The result is kind of amateurish. I probably go back and read more of them - if there is a gem or two, it will be worth the time, but I really couldn t recommend this.

Well-Intentioned, Poorly Executed
Derived From Web , Aug 12, 2021
The book has an interesting approach to science fiction, but becomes so mired in political commentary that many stories lose focus or even memorable impact despite having interesting themes surrounding zombies, eugenics, alien worlds, etc. However, that does not excuse choppy and sometimes poor story-telling that evokes a meh at best and a yawn at worst.

Visionary
Derived From Web , Nov 17, 2020
Octavia's brood is an anthology of speculative fiction or more specifically visionary fiction. There are stories that explore frameworks of human growth and change, others that imagine universes that are disabled, and some that gave me a really clear idea of the choices I will make ten, twenty years from now. The book segways neatly into my reading of Emergent Strategy and I am glad to have taken my time with it.

Excellent gateway into Visionary Fiction
Derived From Web , Aug 10, 2020
I gave four stars because the short stories differed a lot in how much I liked them. The ones I loved so much I wanted more! Highly recommended if this is your first foray into black and POC Science - Fiction - writers and stories about underrepresented groups. Definitely brought me to read Butler's other work.

Interesting and Challenging Stories
Derived From Web , Jul 30, 2020
Most of these stories left me pondering things and very much wishing that they were part of a 3 volume saga so that I could simply soak up the author's thoughts. Simply put a lot of fun on the inspiration.
