Book Overview

On Being Liked is the transforming and joyful sequel to Faith Beyond Resentment, which established James Alison as one of the most striking, original, and intellectually irresistible voices in the church. In this book he invites us to let go of a commomnly-held account of salvation and takes us step-by-step through a bold adventure of re-imagining the central axis of the Christian story, not as 'How does God deal with sin?' but as 'How do we take up God's invitation to sharein the act of creation?'.

   On Being liked
I liked the book I read before I gave it away, but this was a gift for someone.
   Finding Our Likeness in God
James Alison is a thinker that is extraodinary. I found his book On Being Liked to be the most accessible. Alison is not an easy read and I don't always comprehend everything he writes, but what I do know is that it's audacious and startling in its grasp of scripture. Alison is a God who wants to envelope his creations like a warm blanket and not a God who is punishing or avenging. Alison presumes a belief and basic understanding of Christianity because he is a Roman Catholic priest and theologian, but unlike what you would expect from someone with these credentials, he takes Roman Catholic orthodoxy and puts it to the test The results are amazing. The thinking crowd isn't afraid to work for their revelations and that's what this book is for.
   Refreshing good news
The Gospels' teaching is brilliant. Faith Beyond Resentment renews and maintains my Catholicity, just as this book does.
   natural philosophy naturally wrong
I wish this were true. Truly. It shows you the problem with natural theology. It allows the end of matter to happen. Homosexuality is good as it is natural, so if it is good, then it must be good. I wish his argument was correct and that paedophilia rape and murder were natural occurrences. The best bits were borrowed fromrene girard and the source was better in this case.
   A lire absolument !
To enter into a true conversion process you need to read a wonderful book. Good reading
   An enlightening read
Excellent, that's correct. His best book yet. He's made me think. Best read with Margaret Barker and David Hart.
