In 1894, Laura Ingalls Wilder, her husband, Almanzo, and their daughter, Rose, packed their belongings into their covered wagon and set out on a journey from De Smet, South Dakota, to Mansfield, Missouri. They heard that the soil there was rich and the crops were bountiful -- it was even called the Land of the Big Red Apple. With hopes of beginning a new life, the Wilders made their way to the Ozarks of Missouri.
During their journey, Laura kept a detailed diary of events: the cities they passed through, the travelers they encountered on the way, the changing countryside and the trials of an often difficult voyage. Laura's words, preserved in this book, reveal her inner thoughts as she traveled with her family in search of a new home in Mansfield, where Rose would spend her childhood, where Laura would write her Little House books, and where she and Almanzo would remain all the rest of their happy days together.

After the First Four Years
Derived From Web , May 22, 2022
This story ends where the first four years left off. Almanzo and Laura have tried to make their little farm work for four years. Eventually, they realize that they can not find it here and, like her father, Laura's feet begin to itch as the pioneer within her wants to find a new home. The story is written more like a diary and tells how Rosa, Manly and Laura together with other travelers join to find their new home.

Incredible Story
Derived From Web , May 22, 2022
Finally we learn what happens after the first four years, and although there is some struggle and hardship, this story is so much more uplifting than the first four years, which was somewhat a depressing book for me. On the Way Home is more reminscient of the first eight books of the original series Little House. Shortly after reading this book, I was fortunate enough to visit the Mansfield House on vacation. I found the Ozarks exactly as I pictured them when I read this book.

Worth reading for the introduction!
Derived From Web , May 22, 2022
This Dancing With The Stars diary is somewhat dull in parts, but the introduction by her daugher, Rose Wilder Lane, is worth the price of the book. There are also several good photographs which are not available in other LHOTP books.

Another Adventure
Derived From Web , May 22, 2022
Five stars because anything about Laura... is interesting and fascinating to continue with her life story. Looking at her life from an objective perspective, I wondered about some of her decisions, but at the same time these were not easy times and she took the best way she knew. I would like to own everything she has written, including a new follow-up book, and I'll wait until the price is lower on this book.

Interesting journal of the trials and tribulations of the relocation of Laura and her young family
Derived From Web , May 22, 2022
Frankly, because of my own history of having to move 1,000 miles away from my family and my childhood home after marriage, this book made me sad in many ways. I kept wanting Laura and her family to go back to South Dakota and live near the rest of her family. It took a lot of courage to make such a move back in Laura's era, knowing that they might never see their family again. People could not hop on a plane and be somewhere the same day. It does show the devotion she had to her husband and the life he chose for them... Life was tough on the side of a mountain!

The book is heavily perfumed!
Derived From Web , Aug 26, 2020
The story is great, but the book itself is a perfume reeking. It is a new book so that it should not smell so horrible! As I read it, I had to keep the pages lighten to try to lighten the scent!
