Book Overview

A graphic edition of historian Timothy Snyder's bestselling book of lessons for surviving and resisting America's arc toward authoritarianism, featuring the visual storytelling talents of renowned illustrator Nora Krug.

Timothy Snyder's New York Times bestseller On Tyranny uses the darkest moments in twentieth-century history, from Nazism to Communism, to teach twenty lessons on resisting modern-day authoritarianism. Among the twenty include a warning to be aware of how symbols used today could affect tomorrow (4: Take responsibility for the face of the world), an urgent reminder to research everything for yourself and to the fullest extent (11: Investigate), a point to use personalized and individualized speech rather than cliched phrases for the sake of mass appeal (9: Be kind to our language), and more.

In this graphic edition, Nora Krug draws from her highly inventive art style in Belonging--at once a graphic memoir, collage-style scrapbook, historical narrative, and trove of memories--to breathe new life, color, and power into Snyder's riveting historical references, turning a quick-read pocket guide of lessons into a visually striking rumination. In a time of great uncertainty and instability, this edition of On Tyranny emphasizes the importance of being active, conscious, and deliberate participants in resistance.

Powerful portrayal of current truth drawn from history.
Like the saying goes : The reason we study history so not to repeat it... Might needs to take a break because the power of the truth that it reveals can be overwhelming. Circle back tho... we must stay strong ''.
   Every home should have this
This book has gained popularity right across the world as a cogent description of how tyranny is imposed. A good reminder for us all.
   Ominous Warning to the USA
A very brief dissertation on the dangers of US democracy, similar to Hitler's actions in Germany and Soviet actions in Russia. Effectively, numerates actual similarities in the US.
Accessible to a broader range of readers
A welcome update of the original On Tyranny Twenty Lessons of the Twentieth Century. Words AND images are intended to engage the reader on a deeper level.
Must read for those who care!
You must read if you want to understand what could be happening at this time in this country! It is so important to me. It is very easy to read and understand!
Great adaptation with illustrations that help reinforce the text. The concepts are SOLID!
If you're looking for a book that is easy to read as a typical book, get the original version. It is PHENOMENAL, as is this, but for different reasons it has the GOLDEN content of wisdom from Snyder. I had the audio version and when this came out, I decided to buy the paperback version in this form, so that I could easily reference when I needed it. And we should cite this book, DAILY, with all the details. It should be required reading for all high schoolers if we cared about our nation and preserving it.
Almost half the way thought the Donald Trump bashing got too much and I tossed it on a bottom shelf. A book full of hitler and Stalin is clear, but when you add Trump and no other presidents, the author's bias is understandable.
A must read if you care about democracy
I highly recommend '' this book. Get the graphic version that came out just fine. The illustrations are fabulous. Easy to read and you can understand it in fewer than 2 hours.
A stunning graphic novel version of a very important book
The original text version of On Tyranny '' has proven one of the most important books in recent years. I hope this graphic version of it attracts even more readers. The artist Nora Krug was the perfect choice as illustrator. Her interpretations of Snyder's words are inspiring. To those who complain that you can not read it easily, check out other works by Krug, especially “Belonging”. I hope you don 't read it on a phone, because that is not how graphic novels are best read. Either read the physical printed version or get it printed on a larger screen iPad or computer. It will all be read easily and your complaint won 't drive readers away from this wonderful work.
   What Is This?
I am very disappointed in this graphic condition on the screen... in a very small landscape form, literally illegible, type to extremely small to read and just so poorly presented that I can not read it. Very disappointed!
