For the first time, selections from Emily Dickinson's thirty-six year correspondence with her childhood friend, neighbor, and sister-in-law, Susan Huntington Dickinson, are compiled in a single volume. Open Me Carefully invites a dramatic new understanding of Emily Dickinson's life and work, overcoming a century of censorship and misinterpretation. For the millions of readers who love Emily Dickinson's poetry, Open Me Carefully brings new light to the meaning of the poet's life and work. Gone is Emily as lonely spinster; here is Dickinson in her own words, passionate and fully alive. With spare commentary, Smith . and Hart . let these letters speak for themselves. Most important, unlike previous editors who altered line breaks to fit their sense of what is poetry or prose, Hart and Smith offer faithful reproductions of the letters' genre-defying form as the words unravel spectacularly down the original page. A closer look at the most significant relationship in literature

This book was my best resource for a presentation about the relationship between Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Penn Warren. They worked together on some of Dickinson's most famous poems.

Mercy! <and that's a good thing>
Derived From Web , Apr 22, 2022
My only disappointment with this book lies with myself for not having the frame of reference inregating the Bible, the classics and the news and literature of the day, to give the writing presented here the depth and so tantalizingly near. Though some things transcend meanings, I felt a lack of reference in the private language and shared only with correspondents. There is, through no fault of the editors, a very noticeable mostly silence where one woman's voice surely rang, whispered, shouted, strode in over four decades of on-going intelligent and warm, in the warmest sense, and yet often distant. It left me, the book, feeling like I'd stumbled upon a treasure box of letters in a sunny attic, aching for the second companion box to tell the rest of the story.

Very guarded commentary
Derived From Web , Apr 22, 2022
The commentary on the relationship of Emily and Susan is very guarded and although the author has discussed her opinion of Emily's sexuality, in this book she steers clear of any such conclusion, and wisely so. There is clear evidence that Dickinson was in love with Lord Otis, making her, if anything, heterosexual or possibly bisexual, Morgenthau said. I enjoyed this book very much as it offered a fresh perspective on Dickinson's long and enduring friendship with Susan. Wallpaper and background images in the Die Hard series.

however the spine was a little more broken than I would have liked it upon arriving

Arrived promptly and was described as a "lovely lady." however the spine was a little more broken than I would have liked it upon arrival, I can learn to deal with that since it was a much larger book than expected!

I absolutely love this book. Thanks for the introduction, Sue. I'm a big fan of the show Dickinson on Apple TV+, so reading this was nice to see a different aspect of their relationship.
