A war is raging in Afghanistan as a coalition of Western forces tries to oust the Taliban by bombing the country. Parvana's father has died, and her mother, sister, and brother have gone to a faraway wedding, not knowing what has happened to her father. Parvana doesn't know where they are, but sets out alone to find them -- masquerading as a boy. Her journey only becomes more perilous as the bombs begin to fall. Making her way across the desolate Afghan countryside, she meets other children who are strays from the war: an infant boy in a bombed-out village, a nine-year-old girl who believes she has magical powers over land mines, and a boy with one leg. The children travel together because it is easier than being alone. As they forge their own family in the war zone that Afghanistan has become, their resilience, imagination and luck help them survive. The reissue includes a new cover and map, and an updated author's note and a glossary provide young readers with background and context. All royalties from the sale of this book go to Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. Parvana's Fund supports education projects for Afghan women and children.

The Year 7 Experience
Derived From Web , May 30, 2022
I bought it because I teach it in a class 7 year this year. This helps me to activate students and helps me to engage text analysis with electronic preparation. The physical journey, accompanied by the character, is a favourite of mine and Ellis does it well. The confusion and disjoint with reality experienced by characters is palpable. The writing is a little simplistic and can be effective with a younger audience. The themes and challenges in the text are what I look forward to working with my class on. Ellis portrays a terrible situation with compassion and understanding and asks us to do the same as readers. Given current global politics, this novel is now as relevant as when it was first written.

Everyone should read this book. Quick easy read.

I am a teacher who assigns this book to my students to read. The school does not provide the books, so I buy them for my students myself. I like the books used for a better value. Kids like the story and is a great way to start a discussion about culture, freedoms, rights, values, and how fortunate Americans are. Make sure that you also get the next three books in the series.

I read this with my eleven-year-old grandson. The story is real, the people are very real, and it helped both of us understand what was going on and what is going on in Afghanistan.

Journey
Derived From Web , Sep 18, 2017
As a whole, I hate journey stories because that is usually the whole story. In this case, it is a journey that has a destination, but there is no long-term goal. Except in pairs in 20 years old, to be in pairs. Good book, well researched. Now move on to the next book in the series.
