Jeff Anderson and literacy coach Whitney La Rocca take you into primary and intermediate classrooms where students are curious about language, engage with the world around them, and notice and experiment with the conventions all writers use. Instead of chanting grammar rules or completing countless convention worksheets, we invite young writers to explore conventions as special effects devices that activate meaning. Our students study authentic texts and come to recognize these patterns of power--the essential grammar conventions that readers and writers require to make meaning.
The first part of the book introduces a vibrant approach to grammar instruction and sets up what you need to immerse yourself in the Patterns of Power process, inviting students to experiment and play with language. The second part of the book offers over seventy practical, ready-to-use lessons, including:
In Patterns of Power Jeff and Whitney suggest that taking just five minutes from your reading workshop and five minutes from your writing workshop to focus on how the conventions connect reading and writing will miraculously affect your students' understanding of how language works for readers and writers.
It takes about 7 Hours and 25 minutes on average for a reader to read Patterns of Power: Inviting Young Writers Into the Conventions of Language, Grades 1-5. This is based on the average reading speed of 250 Words per minute.
Patterns of Power: Inviting Young Writers Into the Conventions of Language, Grades 1-5 is 416 pages long.
The book is great but the shipping was horrible!!!
Derived From Web , Aug 21, 2021
The content is itself wonderful! I'm excited to teach this to use grammar and writing this year. The shipping of this item was terrible! As a result, the plastic spine was bent upwards and could not be straightened. The pages will not fold flat, nor can they be laid over, as is expected with a spiral bound book. Considering that the book cost over $50, it should be packed much better than it was! Amazon wants the item returned before I can issue a refund or replacement. I don 't have a UPS location remotely close, plus I need the book for school, so I won 't bother. I just think that Amazon should issue a partial refund due to the damaged product.

Patterns of Power has changed the game of teaching conventions in the younger students! The way I teach this way of writing has changed tremendously. It also changed the way they read. I would recommend this book to you if you are struggling to get your students to use conventions appropriately.

"Progressive Tense" has nothing to do with Flo...
Derived From Web , Jan 25, 2018
Not only is this book full of fantastic ways to make abstract grammatical concepts more concrete and accessible for young writers, but it is also designed to deepen the teacher's conceptual understanding in ways that honor all learners - even grown-up ones. If you think that progressive tense means someone named Flo is trying to sell you insurance angrily, then this is definitely the book for you!
