   A Unique and Clever Novel
There is something about the writing style and characters that I truly enjoyed. It is a very unique and clever story told from the perspective of a 14 year old asthmatic boy, Reuben. It reminded me in some ways of Prince of Tides, another book I liked a lot, but with a few miracles tossed in from Heaven just for fun. I read a book a few years ago called The Tower, the Zoo and Tortoise, which was unusual for me in that I found myself enjoying the book paragraph by sentence by sentence word by word. I felt the same way about Peace Like a River '', which made it a very slow, but very enjoyable read. The combination of writing style, characters and overall narrative really worked for me.

   FAVORITE BOOK EVER
While saying it is ever quite a stretch, it is close to true... This is story-telling that harkens to a different age and you settle in with it and come to know the characters in ways that make them feel like family. I love this book truly and simply and having purchased several over the years to give to people who were similarly endeared and impressed, I can say with confidence that you 'll enjoy it.

   Peace is often in the midst of struggle
The PEACE LIKE A RIVER was a book club selection. Members wanted to talk about deep life perceptions, miracles and mystery. I was a little apprehensive in the beginning, but really enjoyed the story and gave me some things to wonder about on the way. Characters were well developed and kept in the story, pulling you along. Peace is at the bottom of it all. Enjoy your holiday in San Jose.

   Peace Like A River - Pulls You In
I have to say that I enjoyed very much this book. The author's use of words is almost an artist's color palette. I love characters development and how Leif Enger gives us peaks into each character ’ s psyche Primarly Reuben, but also other family members. And the ongoing development of Swede's epic is a story by itself. I also love the blending of terms that are most often used in the places and time that the book was set. It's partly because I grew up in a place not too far from the book's setting and a time not too far into the future, but I was captured in my mind's eye by Leif, whether it was the actual geogrpahy, the tone of the buildings, the moods and actions of the characters. I have recommended this book to so many people. It was an unreached treasure that I will read again. Leif, great job!

   Miracles can be confusing
I found this book to be an amazing voyage, not just across the Mid West in the 1960s, but through the mind and experience of a 13-year-old boy ''. I had not long before this read Cold Sassy Tree and I believe that Mr Enger does a much better job of bringing the main character to life. It was hard to believe that despite all the miracles surrounding his father, this was not his own story. I wish that more authors were able to tell a story like this.

   Loved Rubin's voice
This beautifully written book is funny, inspiring, and magical, all rolled into one, told from the perspective of an 11 y/o boy named Rubin. He narrates the story in an authentic voice that reflects the author's mastery of character detail. I truly loved this book.

   A rare novel: engaging, magical, suspenseful. Now a favorite.
I loved this book, and it is hard to describe. It does not fit neatly into any genre that you might name. It is an adventure, a road story in the American tradition, a Western, a family drama, a story of faith, a story of coming of age, with a touch of magical realism. The language is often poetic, but never overly so. The protagonist's 9-year-old sister is as vivid as a kid as Scout Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. I was absorbed through almost the entire book and recommend this book as highly as I can. '' One section restricted believability and could have been shorter, but is still a 5-star novel. The ending is a complete surprise and it is not until then that the meaning of the title becomes clear. A rare gem amidst a sea of poorly written novels.

   Another wonderful book by Enger.
With a title that reminds us of a hymn, this one has probably very much of a Christian “flavor ”. Is Leif Enger a Christian? For example, even just after the main character, Jeremiah, was stillborn, his father, Reuben Land, brought him to life. And there are other miracles throughout the story. The story is essentially told by Reuben and is exciting, full of twists and turns, dangers and surprises. Much of it takes place in the “ Bad Lands ” of North Dakota, and we’re shown how awful the weather can be there. Swede's slightly older sister, Reuben, is very much in the picture. Reuben is 11-year-old throughout the story until the very end. Also a major character is David's much older brother, Reuben, who is running during most of the story.
