Book Overview

Eat vegan--for less

Between low-paying jobs, car troubles, student loans, vet bills, and trying to pay down credit card debt, Toni Okamoto spent most of her early adult life living paycheck to paycheck. So when she became a vegan at age 20, she worried: How would she be able to afford that kind of lifestyle change?

Then she discovered how to be plant-based on a budget.

Through her popular website, Toni has taught hundreds of thousands of people how to eat a plant-strong diet while saving money in the process. With Plant-Based on a Budget, going vegan is not only an attainable goal, but the best choice for your health, the planet--and your wallet.

Toni's guidance doesn't just help you save money--it helps you save time, too. Every recipe in this book can be ready in around 30 minutes or less.

Through her imaginative and incredibly customizable recipes, Toni empowers readers to make their own substitutions based on the ingredients they have on hand, reducing food waste in the process.

Inside discover 100 of Toni's frugal but delicious recipes, including:

  • 5-Ingredient Peanut Butter Bites
  • Banana Zucchini Pancakes
  • Sick Day Soup

   Plant Based
With my career in the kitchen, I get to use Plant Based on a budget as a basic guide of ingredients for vegan cooking. This book serves as a basic introduction in familiarization with the most important ingredients in this book. Many other recipes by these vegan artists show the use of a wider variety of ingredients to learn, practice and sample within the art of culinary cuisine.

   One of my favorites!
This is one of my favorite recipes due to the simplicity and delicious recipes included. The criticism of the use of oils that I feel is unfounded since she includes ways to avoid this.

Great recipes, not all are actual plant based..
This is a great cookbook, but not a cookbook that is based on plant food! I was a little discouraged by this, but quickly decided that the plant-based recipes were worth it!

This book is boring and useless
It has a million staged photos of the author claiming to eat. That is like 30% of your book. Ugh : It is hardly any recipes and is way too simple. There are pages on how to cook just plain beans. If it is hard or like each bean sooo different, it needs a whole new page. Oatmeal is a pyramidal. A baked sweet potato is a sweet potato. Add a vegetable to the pasta dish. Avocado on toast should be had. Yes, eating rice and pasta and potatoes is cheap. But it's boring and that's why I was looking for cookbooks. I don 't need a “recipe ” to add water to oatmeal.

   This was just okay
I had great hopes for this cookbook to save me money, but I didn 't find a lot of recipes that suited me, so I should have saved money by not buying it. I tried to get it first from the library, but there was a long waiting list, so I took a chance.

   NOT Plant-Based
This book should be called “Vegan on a budget ” because most recipes contain oil, which is not part of your typical plant-based lifestyle. If you do not use oil, don 't bother with buying it.

So inspiring! I feel like cooking again.
What a fantastic book! It makes it in some ways more personal. The recipes are easy to make and it is nice to save a little money on the way.

   Full of flavor and cheap!
I would only buy this book again for the tofu veggie pasta recipe, it is so good and so cheap! My teenage is also loving it. This is not a book that requires a lot of unnecessary ingredients that you may not use again. I have too many cookbooks, sitting on my shelf with recipes I have not tried because of the special ingredients. This book is most likely not in this category. For example, the peanut sauce uses chilli paste instead of red pepper flakes. The book has over 100 recipes by my quick count, almost all with pictures. The vast majority are oil-free or have a substitute. There are about three that do not have a substitute listed. I feel like the plant-based world has been waiting for this cookbook for a long time ; don 't hesitate to purchase it.
