Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In a thrilling adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's best-known works, acclaimed artist-adapter Gareth Hinds translates Poe's dark genius into graphic-novel format.

It is true that I am nervous. But why will you say that I am mad?

In The Cask of Amontillado, a man exacts revenge on a disloyal friend at carnival, luring him into catacombs below the city. In The Masque of the Red Death, a prince shielding himself from plague hosts a doomed party inside his abbey stronghold. A prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, faced with a swinging blade and swarming rats, can't see his tormentors in The Pit and the Pendulum, and in The Tell-Tale Heart, a milky eye and a deafening heartbeat reveal the effects of conscience and creeping madness. Alongside these tales are visual interpretations of three poems -- The Raven, The Bells, and Poe's poignant elegy to lost love, Annabel Lee. The seven concise graphic narratives, keyed to thematic icons, amplify and honor the timeless legacy of a master of gothic horror.

   Very Well Done
If you' re a fan of either of the authors, this book is for you. The seven tales and poems that were selected highlight the career of the man. The choices made in the longer stories are spot on. The artist's interpretation of a man isolated in total darkness in The Pit and the Pendulum was very nice. I was a fan of graphic novels and found the footnotes informative. This would make a great gift for a fan of the macabre or a wonderful launching pad for future Poe aficionados. It is very much worth your time.

Many pages aren’t readable due to inability to zoom or enlarge text
The online version of the book is so restrictive that it's hard to enjoy it. There is no control over text size or zoom on many pages. I was really disappointed. I use this on my desktop as a teacher.

   Captivating
I haven't read his poems but I have heard of him. British and West Indian authors made up the majority of the syllabus when I was a child. I loved this graphic novel. It evoked thrills, feeling of dread, fear, shock and sadness. I will definitely check out his work.

   Amazing Support Text
Wow! I use this tool to support my students with learning differences. The pieces of the text present from the original give a taste of the story. With or without the original text, you can still enjoy the writing.

   Why not hand letter?
It's a shame that a book with such beautiful art isn't hand lettered. I would use a Word document with some fonts on top of the great art. I don't understand. The book was lettered by the artist or his friend in a few days. It's sad. There are a lot of good books that are being defaced.

Gorgeous from the cover to the very last page
The graphic novel " Poe Stories and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe" is a welcome addition to my personal library. This volume breathes life into the classics, and I have loved them all my life. I can not recommend this enough, and I am looking forward to more of his work.

   Nice graphic novel
If you want to introduce your student to English literature without making them feel intimidated, this book is for you. This was part of my daughter's curriculum, and she had to read a novel by a famous writer. She liked reading the book with the lights on and the flashlight on. It was nicely constructed.

   A good gift
I bought this for my English pen pal because he enjoys graphic novels and I wanted to give him something quintessentially American. He found this gift to be very nice. Excellent cross- cultural expression. He appreciated it.

Hinds and Poe is a combination I didn't know I couldn't live without until now
Since his first graphic novel, I have been a fan of the author. I like a graphic novel called Poe Stories and Poems. The tone and mood are set immediately by the art and text. It's everything you need in a graphic novel. The Underling couldn't put it down.
