Book Overview

Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em

Poker is America's national card game, and its popularity continues to grow. Nationwide, you can find a game in progress everywhere. If you want to play, you can find poker games on replicas of 19th century riverboats or on Native American tribal lands. You can play poker at home with the family or online with opponents from around the world. Like bowling and billiards before it, poker has moved out from under the seedier side of its roots and is flowering in the sunshine.

Maybe you've never played poker before and you don't even know what a full house is. Poker For Dummies covers the basics. Or perhaps you've played for years, but you just don't know how to win. This handy guide will help you walk away from the poker table with winnings, not lint, in your pockets. If you're a poker expert, you still can benefit - some of the suggestions may surprise you, and you can certainly learn from the anecdotes from professional players like T.J. Cloutier and Stu Unger.

Know what it takes to start winning hand after hand by exploring strategy; getting to know antes and betting structure; knowing your opponents, and understanding the odds. Poker For Dummies also covers the following topics and more:

   A Fair-to-Middling Guide
Poker for Dummies is a reference primer that merits reading for the rube, but is marred by embarrassing mistakes and some half-baked stratagems would you play against someone who carried a game notepad, as they recommend? Still, Dummies deconstructs money management myths, gives good advice. When and why to dump, and explains why calling is often worth the investment. People who don 't know when they are beat. It's a good entryway with some decent nuggets, but I'll refine them elsewhere.

OK but there are so many better poker books out there
I would not get Poker for Dummies again, as there are so many better poker books out there. The book is over 16 years old, so many of the poker site recommendations are out of date. Another issue-the hand recommendations in the Texas Hold 'em section are far too loose, among other things. If you're looking for a more useful poker book, click on my reviews -- I have about 5-6 poker books that I recommend over this one. The book Texas Hold'; em Dummies is much better, and coauthor Lou Kriger has an excellent poker site Pokerology. com, where he goes into very specific detail about how to play winning poker.

   Overly simplistic
If you have never had any exposure to the game at all and are below average in the IQ department, you might learn a little bit from this, probably just enough to make you an overconfident loser.

   Good for absolute beginners
If you know the basic rules of poker, you won 't get much from this book. But as the title suggests, it is useful for those who know nothing about poker. I actually bought it as a gag ''. I keep it in my back and when someone criticizes my play, I pull it out and pretend to read a page as a gag. Usually it gets laughs. The person who complained most often infuriated me. Perfect '' is the name of the Ideal ''.

   Thorough And Concise
Poker For Dummies covers the basics in a thorough and concise way. The book is an easy read and is essential for anyone who wants to play poker and not feel an inclination to walk later in front of a bus. You might still lose money early on, but you know why at least.

   Very good book
In my opinion, the books by Dummies are great. This is no exception.

Good Starter but Some Parts are Extremely Outdated and Obsolete
A fresh starter book for the fledgling poker player and it is apposite for the total newbie to the game. There was no withering criticism on my end, except for the fact that I wish it was 1999 and not 2019. The problem is that this book was written in 2000 and is seriously outdated. If you want to know how to play poker in the late 1990s, it might be useful, especially when it has whole chapters dedicated to telling you what news groups, phone modem minimum bps and what Windows 95 computer has 64MB of RAM to use. I wish the author had done an update sometime in the last twenty years instead of purchasing the original version from 2000!

Good for beginning players or for those who want to review the rules of poker
The odds of winning hands are therefore different than those who play poker in larger groups such as home games with 7 players, which I play in. The book still has value for these players, but the odds of someone not having a straight or full house in a 7 player game is greatly different than someone in a 4 player game.
