Book Overview

Best-selling author Richard J. Foster offers a warm, compelling, and sensitive primer on prayer, helping us to understand, experience, and practice it in its many forms-from the simple prayer of beginning again to unceasing prayer. He clarifies the prayer process, answers common misconceptions, and shows the way into prayers of contemplation, healing, blessing, forgiveness, and rest.

Coming to prayer is like coming home, Foster says. Nothing feels more right, more like what we are created to be and to do. Yet at the same time we are confronted with great mysteries. Who hasn't struggled with the puzzle of unanswered prayer? Who hasn't wondered how a finite person can commune with the infinite Creator of the universe? Who hasn't questioned whether prayer isn't merely psychological manipulation after all? We do our best, of course, to answer these knotty questions but when all is said and done, there is a sense in which these mysteries remain unanswered and unanswerable . . . At such times we must learn to become comfortable with the mystery.

Foster shows how prayer can move us inward into personal transformation, upward toward intimacy with God, and outward to minister to others. He leads us beyond questions to a deeper understanding and practice of prayer, bringing us closer to God, to ourselves, and to our community.

Practical application and invitation, not Theology
This is a great book, especially if you are looking for new and different ways to integrate prayer into your life. Here there is a great deal of variety and this book is both an invitation and a practical manual. However, if you are wrestling with the theology of prayer, this is not the book for you. If you are wrestling with the invitation to intercessory prayer, but not quite understanding why anyone would try to convince God to act in a particular way against another, this book doesn't really answer your question.
Meaningful to read, easy to try
Jesus's truth is perhaps the best way to encounter spiritual truth with practical application mixed with overarching encouragement. Richard Foster explains prayer in a way that is satisfying for beginners and sufficient for seasoned believers. Then take your time, and read it a second time. You will feel a change as you try one or more of his suggestions. As you know, ''
   A Serious Look at Prayer
This little book is a serious look at what is prayer and should be among the members of the Christian community. Foster's Christian background and church tradition color his writing and the seriousness with which he writes is truly refreshing. This book is different from many of the popular books on prayer currently on the market and provides a fresh perspective on the purpose and power of true prayer. Persons who are interested in reading and practicing prayer will profit from understanding this book.
   A welcome guide. Very helpful.
I am not entirely new to prayer, but I am new to praying daily with the explicit goal of coming closer to God. I found this book enormously helpful ''. I was initially timid about praying and impeded by a fear of doing it wrong and affronting God. Mr. Foster helped me see how many different ways there are to pray. Even more importantly, he helped me realize that I can bring all of myself to prayer. Fortunately, I can do all that and more... and also some good things. Now I know that I can come as I am to God without trying to hide or pretend that I am better than I am. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is just beginning with prayer. I suspect that it would be just as valuable for people who have been praying for many years.
   Prayer explained in great detail.
The best compendium on the various types of prayer is single. If you want to learn more about prayer. This book is for reading.
Would have recommended it for guidance.
A very instructional book for someone who wants to know the fundamentals of prayer.
We use it as a study guide for our prayer daughters. Our only problem was the fact that the hardcover was more expensibe than the paperback. The paperback is easier to carry for many. BA :
Bought two as gifts and I am reading this book ...
I read two as gifts and I bought this book for the second time. I am reminded of the many ways that God gets our attention!
Book is excellent. It is difficult to read at a chapter level because there is so much to absorb.
   Great Prayer Companion
Practical introduction to prayer that goes deep into its mysteries and is written beautifully. It is a great compass for those who are just beginning to pray, and a worthy companion for those who need a little inspiration during dry spells.
