Book Overview

Fresh and funny. --New York Times Book Review

Newbery Honor author Shannon Hale and New York Times bestselling illustrator LeUyen Pham join forces in this graphic memoir about how hard it is to find your real friends--and why it's worth the journey.

When best friends are not forever . . .

Shannon and Adrienne have been best friends ever since they were little. But one day, Adrienne starts hanging out with Jen, the most popular girl in class and the leader of a circle of friends called The Group. Everyone in The Group wants to be Jen's #1, and some girls would do anything to stay on top . . . even if it means bullying others.

Now every day is like a roller coaster for Shannon. Will she and Adrienne stay friends? Can she stand up for herself? And is she in The Group--or out?

I just don't like one part of the book. But I like the story.
My love this book and I read it several times, but I just don't like a part when Jenny says, no you can 't be in the group. Jean could have asked just if Kelly can be nicer and stop saying bad things about her to Jen.I could have done five stars if this part was changed.

I am sorry I bought this book!
I am shocked at how mean the girls in this book are to each other. I read it to my two granddaughters and had to comment on how inappropriate it is. The big sister yells at the little girl, calling her names and making her feel awful and even hits her across the face and on the top of the head with a shoe! The girls at the school are just awful. If I had known how these characters treat each other, I would never have spent good money on this book. We stopped at the half-way mark because all three of us thought it was a terrible book. I prefer to have characters who model better behavior ''.

Depressed, anxious, suicidal main character !
I did not like this book at all. Fosters an obsession with what others think of you, with needing friends to feel happy in life. Depression, suicide, other characters being young from boy crazy, just to name a few! Depression, suicide, other characters being young! The main character is only validated when others want to be friends with her. The main character has so much anxiety and a negative outlook on everything that it made me cringe.

   Shannon Hale strikes again
Shannon Hale tried again something new and succeeded completely. Kids love the story, parents love the ideas woven throughout it. Art is really fun to watch, especially when it is really art.

   Religious overtures
I should have read the reviews before buying. But it would be nice if it were clear in the description that this contains references to Jesus, etc.

   Didn't like it.....
A neighbor told me about this book bc her daughter struggles with anxiety so I bought it with reading reviews. My 10 year old daughter read it twice before I had the chance to read it with her. I was surprised at all the drama in the story and also at the references to the Heavenly Father and Jesus. I want my daughter to solve her own problems, rather than pray to a God to fix her problems. I agree with several other reviewers... '' I agree with some other reviewers... I also did not like the talk about dying to make the icky feelings go away. I live in UT, where teen suicide continues to rise. The book gave us some talking points, but this is not the way I teach my kids. This book is not a keeper in our family library.

   uh,i dont know guys
i really love Shannon Hale, don 't get me wrong, but im nine and i found it very disturbing, but at my age group this is unheard of. I mean who is in second grade?!?!?! Uh, people don 't kiss in the second grade, and I have had mean girl problems, but this is crazy. Plus, its weird that Shannon never gets help. Her so-called friends don 't even care about her. They tease her and i was like WOW! This is crazy. Adrienne imagines even DIEING and could possibly have Shannon do something else? She would just stand there and read, and not get me started on the religious content, but is cruel to people with other belifs.U can get this if u want, but read it over and before giving it to 2 ur kid.

Good book with a good lesson
I got this book for my daughter who was going to the middle school for the first time. She read it over a weekend. She read it. She really enjoyed the style of the book and the story and lessons the book had to offer. I 'd definitely recommend this book to children in the same age rage as her. She ’s 11. She's 11.

   One Star
The behaviors of girls in this book are down-right awful. Means unkind, catty, and all around unkind. Not the way young friendships develop ; This book is also potentially suitable for dogmatic Christians only. It is inappropriate for children of other faith systems.

Fine story, but FYI Jesus is in it
This was an Amazon recommendation, and I like the cover art for that other series my kid was making. She loves the book and showed me some parts she identified with. I think it's valuable for a girl to know that these social problems are so common. But as we are passing through, I hear a smiling Jesus in robes, maybe a child whispering to this boy in her times of trial? It's just not something I expected.
