This book is so perfect! It teaches children how to be true to themselves in a way they can understand. This is especially helpful in teaching children in a subtle way about LGBTQ - people.

Be you, regardless of your label...

I work with students who are in special education and come to me with all the labels that are put by so many people on them. I hope this book inspires them to be their own unique selves, regardless of the labels they may have. This book reminds me that it is my job to be that purple crayon, to show my students their unique gifts, and to encourage them to try things even if they are not sure they can.

Story flows and leaves a good ending.

I bought this book because of the reviews. One reviewer was curious about how people perceived the story. I saw a wrong crayon with a blue label on it. If the author wanted to relate this story to gender or to other people's expediencies that they sometimes put on others, then she did a great job. I think our job as society is to find the best in someone and not to tear them down. But, I think that if this story is to be applied to children, they should be given time to grow and not jump to any conclusion until later in life. Most kids change their thoughts.
