Book Overview

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, this beautiful biography of Maya Angelou describes how she rose above a childhood of trauma and emotional pain to become one of the most inspiring voices of our lifetime.

Writer, activist, trolley car conductor, dancer, mother, and humanitarian--Maya Angelou's life was marked by transformation and perseverance. In this comprehensive picture-book biography geared towards older readers, Bethany Hegedus lyrically traces Maya's life from her early days in Stamps, Arkansas, through her work as a freedom fighter to her triumphant rise as a poet of the people. A foreword by Dr. Angelou's grandson Colin Johnson, describes how a love of literature and poetry helped young Maya overcome childhood trauma and turn adversity into triumph. Coupled with Tonya Engel's metaphorical and emotive illustrations, this biography beautifully conveys the heartaches and successes of this truly phenomenal woman, and in a powerful tribute to the written word.

   Stunning Picture Book Biography
This beautiful picture book biography of Maya Angelou celebrates the poet's achievements for younger readers. Author Bethany Hegedus shares gently, but does not shy away from the hardships and trauma of Maya Angelou's life. The book gives grown ups the opportunity to discuss important themes in Angelou's life and work, including child sexual abuse, racism, young motherhood, civil rights activism and family relationship. Moreover, the book beautifully illustrates the power of words, stories and one's own voice. It teaches young readers that there is no safety in silence and provides a wonderful example of activism in Maya Angelou's life. It is lyrical, atmospheric and includes clips from Angelou herself. From Maya Angelou to Poet of the People is a powerful and poignant introduction to the life and art of Caged Bird. In lyrical Free Verse, Bethany Hegedus begins with Angelou's early life in Stamps, Arkansas. Using reserved poetic language filled with heart, Hegedus follows the trajectory of Angelou's life, ending with back matter that includes a timeline and additional resources and references. Tonya Engel's charming oil and acrylic illustrations are rich in symbols and provide an evocative complement to the emotionally-resonant text. This is a splendid tribute to a phenomenal woman.
