Book Overview

Who better to investigate the literary spirit world than that supreme connoisseur of the unexpected, Roald Dahl? Of the many permutations of the macabre or bizarre, Dahl was always especially fascinated by the classic ghost story. As he realtes in the erudite introduction to this volume, he read some 749 supernatural tales at the British Museum Library before selecting the 14 that comprise this anthology. Spookiness is, after all, the real purpose of the ghost story, Dahl writes. It should give you the creeps and disturb your thoughts. For this superbly disquieting collection, Dahl offers favorite tales by such masterful storytellers as E. F. Benson, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Rosemary Timperley, and Edith Wharton.

Good ghost stories, especially for kids!
Read through this book, which was requested by my grandson... Roald Dahl, best known as a children's author, was researching ghost stories for a possible TV series. He distilled HUNDREDS of stories and read them down to just over 20. These are mostly old stories and enjoyable, but a little tame for these days. Which is a good thing, as a 7 year old will receive this book for Christmas!
   Thanks for my books Amazon
I love Roald Dahls books always. Today I am happy to receive my book from Bunny.

Knowing Roald Dahl's own books, I thought he would have chosen the kind of stories I wanted for my preteen grandson, slightly creepy, and interesting to children. Instead, I got a book of pensive old-fashioned stories that I can 't imagine a child wanting to read.
   Five Stars
10 Stars '' HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Seeing is Believing! ''.
It's OK. Not Bad but Not Great Either!
As an avid lover of ghost stories, I was quite excited when Amazon recommended this book. Especially around this time of year when the days grow shorter and a chill hangs in the air. The choice of stories was sadly a little redundant. With many carries on for pages with a rather lackluster denouement. Granted, many of these stories are historical pieces and the writing style is reflective of the time, but many were simply... boring. Here there are some real gems, however : The Corner Shop, In the Tube, Playmates, Ringing the Changes, The Sweeper and The Upper Berth. All of these have just the right amount of mystery and creepiness to make for an excellent ghost story. I would dare say that Ringing the Changes might be one of the best I ever read in its buildup for what would become a night of pure terror for the protagonists. Overall, not bad, but not great, given the price, it is worth the purchase for the above stories alone.
It will leave you breathless but not in a good way.
The run on the sentencing is worse than Stephen King! Don 't order for your kind - they will get exhausted reading the first two paragraphs and quickly want to throw it down. The huge word usage was way over done. I tried to read Unit up to do, which I love to do, and it had me exhausted. It is very oblique, but to the point of being descriptive. I can 't tell you how it ended up, as I couldn t bear to read anymore.
   these are english ghost stories
I paid more attention to the listing than I expected. The book I received had a different cover than the one pictured. I personally love English mysteries, so I am going to give it to her.
Not what we expected, but so far good.
I read the description before purchasing this, as I always do, but somehow I didn 't realize that this was a collection of Roald Dahl's favorite ghost stories by OTHER AUTHORS. I'm going to be entertaining, we only read the first story so far, but it was honest. With the haunting season approaching, we will soon get back into these stories and I'll update my review.
Afterwards, I went straight to Edith Wharton's story, and I was not disappointed with her ghost story, a piece inspired by a ghost that one never knows until long afterward, gave me chills with its originality and execution. Despite its prose of 1902, its structure was as modern as any film or television show today.
   Printing flaws
This review is about the actual flaws of the book's printing. There are quite a few pages where all the words are blurry, giving me a headache. Too bad I didn 't see this earlier, as I didn 't get to these stories until later.
