We love this book - of course, we're children of the MJ era, so I love reading about his childhood, but the story overall is great for children - emphasizing hard work and patience for success. Very encouraging, uplifting story that's also a lot of fun. Very appropriate for 3-4 year old level, up through older kids who will understand some of the underlying messages more clearly. As well, great illustrations, as well.

This book fits perfect into my young tutee's schema for Michael Jackson and the game of basketball. Before this boy came to read that day, I had put a salt shaker on our work table. When he finished his reading, he hurriedly removed his shoes and put salt into them! Here is the part that can make grown educators cry : he said that he would be sure to shake salt into his shoes on the day of the PARCC test! To what has come the science of education? We all know the answer to this question : the SUITS have taken over! , and made a real mess of things.

For those looking for the courage to pursue their goals, SALT IN HIS SHOES will inspire you
Derived From Web , Jan 9, 2021
I have to admit that I have not read much about Michael Jordan's path to success. I had discovered this book online and decided to read it to find out more about his path. I love how his mother and his sister show how Michael wanted to do his best and what he was willing to do to get there. The title of the book for me doesn't really tell the story. What does is that hard work, dedication and faith are the ingredients for us all to get where we want to go. His mother introducing the idea of salt might have been part of his desire to do his part, but it really boils down to he was not willing to give up. This book is encouraging and something that fans of Jordan or just readers will appreciate in general, this book shows why you have to have courage to pursue your goals if you want to win.

Great book for Read Aloud!
Derived From Web , Jun 26, 2020
Purchased this book as a read aloud for my 5th grade class during the black history month. We were doing a classroom book a day in which the teacher reads aloud a picture book to the class every day of school. During Black History Month, I chose books that represented black characters, both historicalreal and fiction. The kids loved learning about Michael Jordan's life as he persevered to achieve the highest honors of basketball! Beautiful illustrations also!

Not a great message
Derived From Web , Aug 4, 2019
I don 't think we should teach our children that even if you are an inner city black kid, all you need to do is pray hard and work hard. So all black people living in poverty did not work hard and pray enough? This idea is central to systemic racism and should not be perpetuated.

Great book!
Derived From Web , Jul 25, 2019
This is an awesome book for y, your little one. The first time I read it to my boys, my 2-year-old who can not help, but was quiet on the whole way through story time. My five-year-old, who finished the book when I looked in my eyes and told me that he had to put it outside his bedroom so that his little brother would not bend the book. He then insisted that we pray before bedtime! Two firsts from my boys, I think it's safe to say that they have a new favorite book. This book is highly recommended!
