Fascinating, beautifully told, for adults as well as teens
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I fell in love with this book. It took a bit of getting used to, but once I did, I was hooked. I don't have much to say except that I didn't know it was a YA book until I finished it and read the reviews. This doesn't read like a YA book at all, in my opinion, and was equally heart wrenching and beautiful. I highly recommend it.

This real story should be know, great historical fiction about all too true terrible events
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
Excellent read! It's great for all and written for a younger crowd. This is a companion to the shades of grey. It's about people who were stuck between the horrors of Hitler and Stalin at the same time. A good lesson of history is written through a fiction character. Great read for historical fiction fans.

Gripping
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I devour books like a starving person. It is not a new feat to finish a novel of this size in a few hours, but the inability to put this down was new. I didn't realize I was holding my breath. My husband will be annoyed by the cost of the book, but it was well worth it. I will try to read more accounts of the event in honor of the people who suffered through it. Even though one of the outcomes was not what I wanted, I am thankful for the author's portrayal of the characters. I will have to beg her to change her mind.

I wept
Hidee P , Mar 24, 2022
My God this book holds a special place in my heart. When I read the reviews before reading it they said you’ll cry because of this book and I thought “what a bull, i haven’t cried over a book in years” what the heck did book made me so sad that I wept for all of the characters. Its written so beautifully. Ruta Sepetys never fail me. She’s my fave author for historical fiction. This book deserves to be read by all of the people in the universe.

Love In the Midst of Tragedy
Derived From Web , Sep 18, 2020
Human sacrifice and emotion are hard to come to grips with, but this is a great book to read. Each character brings a strong element to the story and their lives line a ship through the water. There is a lot of love and human kindness, but the details and horror of the sinking will not be forgotten. As their lives were revealed, strangers became entwined as a family, and I liked the perspective of each character. The war must never be forgotten. I didn't know about the sinking of the ship before reading the book, but I'm glad I did. The remnants of war are still visible in many of the counties mentioned in the book. It is a good book. I liked Fountains of Silence too.

Extremely Graphic
Derived From Web , Jun 23, 2020
My daughter was required to read this during the summer. The premise of the story was enjoyable but the quick jumping between characters made it hard to follow. The biggest issue I have with the book is the graphic nature of the stories, from the rape of a young girl to the deaths of horses and people, to the missing life boats. I know that this was part of the war, but there are other reasons that people are reluctant to talk about what they have seen and been through. If your teenager or young adult is assigned this be sure to talk about the subject matter.

Interesting Book
Derived From Web , Dec 16, 2019
I was not aware that this book was marketed to young adults. Now that I have finished it, I am unsure. I have conflicting thoughts about the book. Several people meet at the end of WWII and make their way to a port where they will try to board a boat. The Russians have invaded Germany and are known to be brutal. Four people are telling a story about a trek and a German soldier who is dedicated to Hitler. They were on a crowded boat and what happened to them was awful. I was almost done with the book by the middle of it. I'm glad I did since the end tied up some of the stories. Others have complained that they don't understand the ending or like it. I thought it was wonderful. I am glad I persevered to the end, I thought this was a particularly harrowing book.

Read this book
Derived From Web , Aug 16, 2019
I don't usually write reviews but this book was powerful and stayed with me long after I finished it. I don't read more than once a year, but I would read this one again. It's well written. There are characters you know.
