   Substitute Teacher Approved
I am a substitute teacher and this book is in my arsenal of read books. Kids in the fifth grade through the pre-k find it fascinating. Kids in the fifth grade find it fascinating. The students become very frustrated when the characters are so close to finding something spectacular, only to dig the other way, and the ending leads them wondering exactly where Sam and Dave ended their journey. Usually only a handful of students notice the difference with, Hey, that's a pear tree where the apple tree is?, then other students catch and we go back and find the differences from the beginning to the end of the story. It leads to all sorts of questions, Are they in a parallel universe? Another dimension? A Cave? The center of the Earth? And they all love the dog. Great book for a substitute teacher or read-aloud day. The text is also easy enough for children in the first grade to read with little help.

delightfully simple story, but deep existential possibilities to contemplate
In this book, Sam and Dave dig a hole really well. The language is simple enough for the early learning of reading, but the deeper lessons of leadership, teamwork, persistence, the value of work and self-awareness are what make me love this book. Keep an eye on the beautiful illustrations and you can help your child explore how familiar things can change when you have had a transformative experience. This is my favorite book on my daughter's shelf, and the book I give to friends with young children 2-5.

   Good story the kids like
Good story about children, but don 't love. Not as entertaining for adults as I Want My Hat Back. Still a good book with good illustrations that children will enjoy.

For the Diggers in your classroom
I am a nursery teacher for a school of Reggio inspired and constructivist theory. This book is great, especially if you have dredging in your school. The children love it just the way it is, and it has the perspective on digging.

A Must Have Book for Your Child's Collection!!
Super Cute book and instantly our new favorite son! Not only does he wants to read it all the time, but we find him spouting parts of the story throughout the day. So far he hasn 't dug or large holes, but spring has just sprung so that time will tell. Lol! , Lol!

Priceless Reactions From Children and an Ending That Brings Fascinating Conversation
This is a book for children of 5 years old. Every night we read to our daughters and the reaction that this book brings out in our children is worth every penny. Each time the diggers miss the treasure, there is a resounding NOOOOOO!!! ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Usually followed by squirmish hairpulling from my kids is usually followed by squirmish hairpulling. The final was the biggest fulfillment of the book. I don 't recall reading a children's book and getting so much discussioninput from my daughter at the end. Usually it is Blah Blah Blah... the end book, but not with Sam and Dave. When it came to noticing differences, she was very observant and had some fascinating ideas of why they were different. Reminded me of a classic sci-fi type ending. Originally, I borrowed this from the library, but this is one I wanted to own and read to my future grandchildren.

I don’t get the hype at all
I am so confused by the reviews for this book. I could not be more disappointed. Spoiler Alert Alert : Spoiler Alert : They dig a hole in different directions and then fall out where they started. That’s it, that’s the whole book. Nothing else happens and the end doesn 't make any sense. I don 't see how this book has any redeeming properties.
