   Savage Run
I began reading the CJ Box books on a comment from a friend. I've now read half a dozen and Savage Run held my interest as much as the 1st one I read. Box's books aren't heavy reading. I can pick it up and bury myself in the joy of reading forgetting the chores that await me after a break. His descriptions of the land around him have you feeling as though you're standing in that wilderness with him. Loved this book.

Another on the edge of your seat excellent story line starring Joe Pickett. The awesome imagery of the land is beautiful as well.

but whose basic goodness and dumb luck get him through the messes he stumbles into ...
The novels of Joe Pickett and the Box's character improve with every sequel. Joe Pickett is an ordinary guy who occasionally slips, but his basic goodness and dumb luck get him through the things he stumbles into in the wild of South Wyoming. I am familiar with his territory and feel the descriptions and characters true. He is not an exaggerated super hero like my beloved Jack Reacher... and I find that refreshing, though wild horses can not take me away from Reacher. If TV were interested in making great drama with a pinch of comedy instead of reality shows, these novels would make a good series, because PIckett is real, even if the situations are fiction.

   Predictable Story
This book allows you to figure out what happened before it actually happened. I doubt if I will even read the Mr. XXI book. Box Books is a book by George Jones. It is a wonder that he has ever sold it to a publisher. The only serious note to the book is the description of the area where the story takes place in Wyoming. I just gave it the two stars for being generous.

   Entertaining New (to me) Author
The story and presumably the entire series is set in present-day Wyoming, a place where I spent a little time over the years. I particularly enjoy the details that the author uses in describing weather and geography, both are accurately portrayed and become characters in an of themselves. Anyone who has a 4-wheel drive pick-up in a washed out trail or negotiated a Wyoming muddy two track in a freaky June snow squall will relate. The protagonist, Joe Picket, is believable, a family man and a guy doing a job, as opposed to being a super-human hero, as so many in adventure novels become. Ever-present is the tension between ranchers, federal landowners, locals, hunters, conservationists and an often-remote bureaucracy, all with valid points of view.

   Another Excellent Book
Another excellent book by CJ Box is this. Some of the things I like about this author are the following : First, he has an excellent character development. Joe Pickett and his family are all very well developed. I almost felt that I was there with them, listening to and understanding their conversations. When Joe Pickett is in the field, traveling in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, CJ Box does an excellent job of describing the country. I had a sense that I was there with them again. I have been to this area of the country and would like to live in spite of no spring, but life is a series of compromises. CJ Box brings me back to the countryside he is describing and that is a joy to me. Other than these two areas of character development and countryside descriptions, there are few words. I can 't wait to read the next book in the Joe Pickett series.

   Love This Series
The main character, Joe Pickett, is very interesting.. and holds my attention always. His family is also well written. The Wyoming - land, both prairies and mountains are described so perfectly that I feel like I can smell the air. I have no doubt that I read every one of these books.
