A vibrant new voice . . . a modern classic.
For generations, the Beaumont family has harbored a magical secret. They each possess a savvy--a special supernatural power that strikes when they turn thirteen. Grandpa Bomba moves mountains, her older brothers create hurricanes and spark electricity . . . and now it's the eve of Mibs's big day.
As if waiting weren't hard enough, the family gets scary news two days before Mibs's birthday: Poppa has been in a terrible accident. Mibs develops the singular mission to get to the hospital and prove that her new power can save her dad. So she sneaks onto a salesman's bus . . . only to find the bus heading in the opposite direction. Suddenly Mibs finds herself on an unforgettable odyssey that will force her to make sense of growing up--and of other people, who might also have a few secrets hidden just beneath the skin.

Savvy Is a Book to Read Aloud.

Ingrid Law is a great writer with a penchant for funny language and interesting characters. Her characters are magic, sort of, but are mostly relateable. I read her books to my children and Saavy is one of my favorite. This book made my daughter feel powerful, but it also made me feel pensive. It made me think about words, both written and spoken, and how magic or terrible they can be. It is a wonderful book to read.

This was a very fun book to read with my 5th grader, who hates reading. Highly recommended to anyone with a middle school child who does not enjoy reading.

Creative story

This is the first story in the trilogy and does draw you into the lives of the characters. The author uses the idea of a new and different power in a special magical twist that does not manifest itself until adolescence.

THIS STORY YOU WILL NEVER FORGET - HAVE FUN!
Derived From Web , Oct 29, 2020
I have read it several times and recommended it to everyone I know. It is magical, humorous and just fun to plan. Her unique style of writing keeps the reader turning the pages late into the night. There will be no forcing to get your child to read... they will tuck you into the book and you will have to wait until they are tucked into bed to read it yourself. So, enjoy the book and then loan it to as many as you can! Ingrid Law...I'm waiting for your next interesting story of this continuing family!

reading to the kids, at least one chapter a night
Derived From Web , Oct 9, 2019
The chapters are short and bite sized, the kids are interesting and different and the powers are fun. Kid's love the idea of a family of special people and the journey itself is an interesting ride. The added touch of kid-styled word choices and patterns goes well with reading loud, and the way the story is presented allows for a little bit of reading each night even when time is pressed. Here and there they even work in some nice messages. Good YA fiction, and we enjoy it a great deal, thanks!
