Perfect for the first days of school. I am a new media specialist and every year I read a primary book to create excitement for the school or library. This is perfect because have you ever thought about the first day from the school perspective? What great discussions we have after reading this! I love the fire - drill scene especially. Empathy is a big theme in the story, as is embarrassment and pride. Of course, the award winning illustrator Christian Robinson's pictures are also delightful. I read a lot of picture books, but they don't all make me giggle with joy as I read like this. My students are in for a treat and I can 't wait!

Well intentioned

School from the perspective of the school - a clever idea. This reader wished it didn't have such a message-driven feeling, though the message is basically that the school will welcome you.

Here are lots of great discussions. We also had a great sense of humor, and we loved poring over the illustrations. A must-read book.

Great SEL Book
Derived From Web , Sep 23, 2021
The first few days of the school I used this picture book to do a SEL lesson. We examined how school was nervous with all the children coming in and how we can be nervous at the beginning of the school. It was a great opportunity to confront and solve those first day jitters. I teach the 6th grade.

This book is wonderful to read to first graders the first day.

The book came quickly and in excellent condition. My first students loved the story, especially to see the school's point of view on the first day. Parts and parts all can connect with experiences they had. This was a great aloud to them with read vocabulary words to pre-teach.

Don't like some of the book's themes
Derived From Web , Dec 29, 2018
I ordered two of these books for my granddaughters, who were beginning kindergarten. However, after reading them through, I did not like some of the themes presented in the book. First, the school experiences being ridiculed by some older kids who say they hate school. A small girl is then afraid and doesn 't want to attend school at all. She later says she doesn 't like school. It all wraps up OK, but I felt it created the expectation that school is not liked by children. Not a good message to give to a child who looks forward to her first day of kindergarten!

Not what it seems

I needed not the book I was. The book has the school being mean and even scared to the kids. Not a book I want to read to incoming kindergarteners.

SUPER FUNNY!

The first day of the school by Christian Robinson, pictures by Adam Rex. The school is pretty sure that it won 't like being full of kids. I think that kind of honesty will go far with little ones. HAHAHA :
