Book Overview

Beatty continues to build a fascinating magical world, the Blue Ridge Mountains and Biltmore Estate developing beyond mere settings into characters themselves. Each place reveals history and clues to Serafina's life and those of other gifted, mysterious beings. Even better than its predecessor, a sequel that delivers nonstop thrills from beginning to end.--Kirkus, starred review.

Serafina's defeat of the Man in the Black Cloak has brought her out of the shadows and into the daylight realm of her home, Biltmore Estate. Every night she visits her mother in the forest, eager to learn the ways of the catamount. But Serafina finds herself caught between her two worlds: she's too wild for Biltmore's beautifully dressed ladies and formal customs, and too human to fully join her kin.

When a mysterious series of attacks test Serafina's role as Biltmore's protector, she finds herself torn from the side of her best friend and only ally, Braeden Vanderbilt. Heartbroken, she flees.

Deep in the forest, Serafina comes face-to-face with the evil infecting Biltmore--and discovers its reach is far greater than she'd ever imagined. All the humans and creatures of the Blue Ridge Mountains are in terrible danger. For Serafina to defeat this new evil before it engulfs her beloved home, she must Read More chevron_right

I had the opportunity to be part of an advanced reader group and can not say enough good things about this book! I was so excited to continue the story of Serafina, which I was completely taken in by in Black Cloak. This book does not disappoint DEFINITELY. I realize this is a book for young readers and I am a 30-something, but I really feel like it has no age limit. It is entertaining and highly suspenseful. The continuation of Serafina's personal story along with a new adventure was excellent reading. If you liked the first one, I would be HIGHLY surprised if you did not LOVE that one. Serafina has really grown up and started to come into her own.
   Serafina's adventure continues-
It is difficult for many sequels to live up to the excitement of a book 1, but Robert Beatty delivers another winner in Twisted Staff! Students in the grades 4 and up will love the mystical qualities that surround and be immersed in the history of the era without being aware. Even adults should be able to appreciate this solid, scary story that does not have to resort to shock and awe and blood-letting of other books in the genre. Teachers should be able to use this book easily in literature groups, as the characters are diverse and clearly described and concepts of conflict and cause-effect abound. Love, love this book and am hopeful that a book 3 will be quick in coming.
Great book kept you interested until the end
For the second book about Serefina, it was just as good as the first. LOVED both books and keeps your interest all the way through the book. When I was in a fight, she was sitting on the edge of my chair.
   A great sequel !
My daughter loves this series and looks forward to the next book.
   Just keeps getting better!
This one was even layered more than the black cloak, what a great read! Beatty has been to Biltmore Estate several times and Mr. Beatty's descriptions of the house and the grounds are spot on, as one would expect. There is truly nothing like it. It's great to see the author using the South Appalachian Mountain Magic and Lore as its subject matter, brings back some great memories of stories shared around fires in the Smokies. Mr Beatty, again thank you for another well-told story, so looking forward to the next!
10 year old is loving this series
My 10 year old son reads enthusiastically this series and says that they are his favorite books he has ever read.
   Fun fantasy and adventure book!
This book is fun, written perfectly and amazing to read. I would definitely recommend reading all the books, I wish there was more!
   In love with Serafina!
First of all, I love Biltmore Estate, so that following the kids around this majestic house and property is so much fun. And secondly, Robert Beatty has managed to create a wonderful world that combines fantasy and reality in mystical ways. And the storyline is creatively scary, and at times original, exciting. This is a great series for children and adults alike and I couldn 't recommend it more!
A rare sequel more worthy even than the first novel, still filled with heroic acts worth aspiring to.
There is often a sophomoric slump in the work, as is Serafina and the Black Cloak, but happily that is not the case with this second novel in what I hope will be a continuing series. The villainy is even more shady and dire! Our heroes are even more determined to flourish so that evil can not prevail! The puzzles are even more difficult, and all players may not be truly what they appear to be. But, along with several crucial life lessons, they learn that the deepest darkness is best met by all friends and neighbors finding uncommon spirit to turn them into a powerful weapon to defeat the most vile forces that threaten one and all. And as before, the resolution is once again meaningful, insightful and soul-warming... even as storm clouds appear on the horizon...
   Swift reading
Although the book could have been shorter in my opinion because Mr. Beatty thinks more complicated and/or detailed than they need to be and the main characters in the course of a few days get into more trouble than is reasonable and I can skim through the overwritten parts without losing the important story line. It is a great book to read in bed when you don 't want anything too heavy or stressful!
