Book Overview

The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7, contains some of Jesus most profound and most memorable teachings. What might these teachings have mean to his disciples, and to the others who first heard them? How do they enhance our reading of the rest of the Gospel of Matthew, and how do they speak across the centuries to listeners today? How, if we pay careful attention to his words, does Jesus provide us a road map to living as God would have us live?

In Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner's Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine introduces the major topics in the Sermon on the Mount, explains historical and theological contexts, and shows how the words of Jesus echo his Jewish tradition and speak forward to reach hearts and minds today.

This book provides a rich and challenging learning experience for the individual reader and also makes a wonderful, six-week group study with the additional Leader Guide, DVD, and 40-day readings

   Great read
Levine has done it again and again. She combines biblical knowledge with wisdom and wit. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
Gives a much deeper in site into Jesus's Sermon.
His book, "Ethics and Jewish Studies," was co-authored with Amy-jill Levine, a professor at the University of New York. She is Jewish. Though Blair has drawn some criticism for saying so, she made her controversial status known. But she helps clarify, in the Jewish Law, what Jesus was actually saying.
Excellent, broader perspective on the Sermon on the Mount
I loved the broader view that Jill Levine brings to this well-loved portion of the New Testament, said Dr. Richard Goldberg, director of the Baylor College of Theology. You think about what the message was to the audience at the time as well as what it is for us today. It's an excellent book, I recommend it to anyone.
Easy to read. I will be reading more by this author. She is not over the top with theology that I lose interest in as other teachers have done, he said.
Liked how the author expanded the scripture readings based on her Jewish background. She helped us to get more out of the lessons. This book is recommended for all who want to learn more about the Sermon on the Mount.
   Once Again, a Great Read
His book, "The Whole Nine Yards," was also a finalist for the National Book Award. I am a pastor, using this book to lead an educational series, take a new look at the Sermon on the Mount. It has inspired me, challenged me, and given me some new insight into this powerful text, Taylor said. I highly recommend this and ALL of Levine's works.
   A home run!
If I may be so bold, your sense of clarity in writing is truly exceptional. I needed this book, with our current world situation being what it is, and I got to see things through a different set of eyes, Raymond said. I have gained a new perspective one I will carry forward into the future. 0 1462228 1462201 This is very serious," said Dr. Goin.
Fresh water from an old well.
Scholars and humorists often find their way to the same sentence. The product is unique because it combines the experience of being enlightened with the entertainment of one's choice.
   Great revival book
This book goes back to the basics, Raymond said. The Lord's Prayer says, "Proclaim that this is God's Word." All scripture should be filtered through these truths, he said. New converts are in for a treat.
