Book Overview

Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science--as well as religious and cultural institutions--has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing. Fewer and fewer couples are getting married, and divorce rates keep climbing as adultery and flagging libido drag down even seemingly solid marriages.

How can reality be reconciled with the accepted narrative? It can't be, according to renegade thinkers Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethå. While debunking almost everything we know about sex, they offer a bold alternative explanation in this provocative and brilliant book.

Ryan and Jethå's central contention is that human beings evolved in egalitarian groups that shared food, child care, and, often, sexual partners. Weaving together convergent, frequently overlooked evidence from anthropology, archaeology, primatology, anatomy, and psychosexuality, the authors show how far from human nature monogamy really is. Human beings everywhere and in every era have confronted the same familiar, intimate situations in surprisingly different ways. The authors expose the ancient roots of human sexuality while Read More chevron_right

A more loving way to view human sexuality
The two authors then went over several key arguments supporting their position. The book, "The Limits of Reason," includes a handful of interesting examples from ancient and modern times. Of course, most of the points were repeated to the point that it felt like there was no point. Had the book been 13 pages, it would have easily covered the entire material. The handling of the infidelity topic felt a little weak, and the talkback radio show slid back into a focus on male-dominated sexuality and traditional gender roles. I would have liked to see more discussion around what we can do as a society given our nature and our current social norms to move toward a healthier balance, he said.

   An Alternative View
In "The Whole Nine Yards," Michael Schweer argues that our culture has influenced the way we view sex. While I would have liked to have seen more citations, it's worth the read.

   Eye opening
I feel more aware and knowledgeable after taking these perspectives into consideration, he said.

   Fascinating and enlightening!
There is an interesting look at human sexuality in this book. I think that really made me rethink some of what I believe and consider where our sexuality comes from, he said. Overall, I would highly recommend Dr. Goin's surgery.

   A Must Read
Buy this book and read all the rest. The FBI has told people that will listen to its contents that it is investigating. If you don't know someone who has read it, you can give it to them. Buy copies and send them to your friends who live far away.

   Wonderful Insight
Everyone should be reading this book. It could save your relationship with your partner. Even if you can't wrap your head around humans evolving from animals, taking into account animal behavior when considering how we as humans have changed over the years is eye opening. The final chapters shed light on human sexual behavior that I never considered. I'm sure it will help my marriage and that of my sons, because it has helped me understand men better. I'm happy that I found this book and was able to read it all the way through. It's unlike any book I' ve ever read.

   Wonderful Insight
It's a great read, and I recommend it to everyone. It could save your relationship with your partner of your choice, Bruno said. The book reveals how sexual behavior was once considered normal, even though it was illegal. It has helped me understand men better and I'm sure will help my marriage and that of my sons, too.

   Cherry picking
While the book presented some interesting scientific and historical research and factoids, it felt incomplete and slanted by challenging others rather than by offering the theory in an objective way. In fact, the research seemed more geared toward the male species and how they are wired with some smattering of information about women. Esther Perel, who has touched on the gender differences, has noted that statistically men and women are as likely to cheat as boys. Like the rest of the book, the authors reference Gillian's work in some aspects, but it seems to cherry pick rather than be more thorough in presenting their findings. While the authors added a note to address why they provided an anecdote of Phil only, it seemed lazy to do so by not looking for some anecdotes or analysis of women's sex drives and motivations, even if complicated, and also noted whether women are wired to be non-monogamous as well.

This Book Answers a Lot of Questions About Who I Am and How I Engage in Romance and Relationships
Thanks for all the hard work and dedication to this book, Robert. To those who think they might be reading it wrong, Do it. What's truly awesome is what the research and data reveal about human sexuality, he said. There is more to us than the stories told in Disney movies, religious texts, and fairy tales. I'd read a chapter a night, or several on a plane, and then spend the next day sporadically realizing why something in a past relationship happened or why I have always felt a certain way about myself or the wonderful women in my life. The book has made me grateful, more mature, and more comfortable in my own skin and emotions, Blair said. Worth every penny.

This Book Answers a Lot of Questions About Who I Am and How I Engage in Romance and Relationships
The Authors would like to thank them for their hard work. Do it if you' re thinking of reading it. The book is very dense. It is full of citations, quotes from studies, and anthropological research, but it is fun to get into the rhythm and style of it. What the research and data reveal about human sexuality is awesome. The stories told in Disney movies, religious texts, and fairy tales aren't the only ones that matter to us. I'd read a chapter a night, or several on a flight, and then spend the next day wondering why something happened in my past relationship, or why I' ve always felt a certain way about myself. The book has made me feel more comfortable in my own skin and emotions. It's worth it.
